Trees N Trunks is an annual overseas project undertaken by NUS students since 2011, in collaboration with The Green Volunteers Singapore (http://thegreenvolunteers.blogspot.sg/) and Elephant Nature Park Foundation, Thailand (http://www.elephantnaturepark.org/).
It is into its 7th edition and this year, and will be taking place in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from 9th to 29th December! This year’s expedition includes two phases spanning across 20 days, the first at Nongmontha Village and the second at the Elephant Nature Park (ENP).
Nongmontha Village is home to gibbon populations whose food sources in the forest are threatened by human encroachment. We expect to plant banana trees to reinforce food supplies for the gibbon populations, such that the villagers and local gibbons may peacefully coexist and flourish. We are also in the midst of planning other small side projects specially for the villagers of Nongmontha Village!
ENP is an elephant sanctuary for the growth and rehabilitation of rescued elephants, many of which are injured & handicapped. Our project at ENP involves carrying out daily chores and afforestation, and aiding the upkeep of the park.
From this expedition, we wish to raise awareness among Singaporeans and students of NUS towards the issue of animal cruelty, especially in the exploitation of elephants for tourism. We also hope to inculcate a greater appreciation for the rapidly deteriorating environment of the world.
