I have this idea to create a completely off grid, viable, sustainable little space for myself, my animals (of which there are many) and others to come and stay at.
In South Africa, it is incredibly hard and expensive to get onto the property ladder. Our financial institutions only really recognize brick and mortar, and occasionally timber framed, houses as something they will provide financing for. However, brick and mortar houses are damn expensive. And I would prefer to not be paying off a home loan for the next 20 years.
So I started researching. There are some amazing companies in South Africa that are trying to bring affordable, off grid housing to the majority. Tiny house builders and shipping container converters. They are doing some seriously amazing work and a few of them even have SABS (performance mark and safety mark in South Africa) accreditation. And still the banks and financial houses won't provide financing for one of these marvels.
So here is my idea. To buy a piece of land (ironically - I can get a traditional loan for this). And put either a tiny house or a converted container house on it. Be completely off grid. Grow my own produce. Possibly get even more animals.
What if I could put another tiny house on the land. Another converted container. People could come over and completely escape technology and life for a while. Experience what it is like to live off the grid and be as sustainable as possible. Feel how honest it feels, to tread lightly on the earth.
Perhaps places like this, successful places, will put enough pressure on the South African financial institutions to start funding these kinds of conversions. This readily available solution can put sustainable, cost effective housing in the hands of so very many people in South Africa.
That is my hope and dream anyway.
