Trans Rift Trail Guides is a community based organization started in 2011 with initial project of diversification of tourism product in the region, the opening up of Trans Rift Trail. A trek that runs from Mochongoi in the Eastern escarpment of the Laikipia plateau to massive Elgeyo escarpments to end at Choroget at a distance of 155 km wide. The trail was traditionally used path by local communities for many hundreds or thousands of years for trading which a time is only one foot wide, in other places as wide as a road, right across the Great Rift Valley. It is the route that Africa’s great explorers used as they searched for the source of River Nile. Bishop Hannington had passed this way on his journey as a missionary to Uganda in 1885, and a previous name for Lake Bogoria was Lake Hannington. Later, in 1892, J.W. Gregory, a British geologist, considered Lake Bogoria “the most beautiful view in Africa”. This area has some of the most spectacular and varied scenery, ranging from attractive landscapes, cultural heritage, and traditional lifestyles together within a small area but most importantly for tourism people can get out of their cars and walk. Other National Parks and Reserves have dangers from large wildlife, lions, buffalo, hippos, etc and tourists are confined to their vehicles. In this area the lack of large mammals has meant that the area has held less appeal for tourists. Across the rift you will find many such pockets of biological interest and value. It has significant conservation value as it crosses important wilderness areas, cutting across a variety of altitudes and habitats including the breeding grounds of the rare greater Kudu, a spectacular eland sized striped, shy and elusive antelope with long backward pointing spiralling horns. These high altitude lands with steep slopes is where the locals have maintained a warmth and hospitality derived from traditional values which is also breeding grounds for Kenyan athletes. Ours is a very tiny bit compared to others but runs across a famous land feature, The Great Rift Valley but nevertheless among the first in the Region. This feature utilizes the same footpaths used on a day to day basis by the local community but only opening it up for visitor use. Tourists and general visitors can disembark at different points and walk it for their own convenient length and time. It is designed to make use of existing facilities such as Reserve Out posts Community Trading and Market Centers. It will also provide alternative livelihood opportunities in for remote and far flung Communities along this old trail in a number of ways. For example the provision of various goods as fresh vegetables and fruits, essential supplies and services such as Guides, Porters, and even donkey for luggage. This will also be a multipurpose area which the community can use it in many ways to promote Environmental conservation activities. We appeal to organizations investors, donors and wellwishers to assist us in order to acomplish these misions.
