In November 2019 I had a really bad fall and hurt my knee. After visiting the doctor, I was referred to an Orthopedic Surgeon as the pain just got worse. As I have a limited Medical Aid, I went to Hottentots Holland Hospital, but would only be able to get an appointment with an Orthopedic Surgeon in March of this year.
As I was in constant pain, I needed to have an Arthroscopy. I went ahead with it, but the unpaid medical bills equated to R65,000. I have been paying this off on a monthly basis and currently have an outstanding balance of R50,000 but now need to have a Total Knee Replacement.
The medical aid option that I am on doesn't cover this procedure unless it is done in a State Hospital, the waiting list is currently to late September 2020. I can have it done privately, but would need to pay a co-payment of R40,000. Funds which I do not have and as a result of the COVID-19 Lockdown, I was temporarily laid off. This has now been changed to Retrenchment with effect from 31 July 2020, so am not assured of any income until I find alternative employment, which at my age is not the easiest.
I am in constant, excruciating pain. Cannot walk or stand without the assistance of crutches and feel I cannot wait until September to see a surgeon at a State Hospital and then wait another two months for an available date for an operation.
