TOMAHAWK’S

TEAM 9671- JAMES MADISON MIDDLE SCHOOL

Thank you for your interest in the Tomahawk’s Robotics Team! We appreciate time you have taken to learn more about our program.

The James Madison Middle School Tomahawk’s Robotics Team exists to encourage the development of students’ interests in the area of science and mathematics. By doing so, the program prepares young minds to expand their horizons and thrive in our increasingly technological world and global economy. The team participates in competitions held by FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a program developed in 1989 in order to inspire more interest in the fields of science and technology. In this competition, our team designs, programs and builds a robot that performs an annually assigned task-all in the span of 6 weeks.

The process of building and designing the robot is not an easy one. It has its expenses and must be completed within six weeks, which flies by unbelievably fast with so many things to get done. The journey from the first kit of parts and the first blank sheet on the drawing board to the completed robot participating in the competition is long and stressful, yet its value and benefits reach so far beyond robotics and competing. Through the program, students gain priceless opportunity to experiment and explore their technological capabilities and gain exposure to several aspects of technology, including technical design, computer programming and even business management.

However, in order to make this journey successful, the team needs support from the community on several different levels. One of the most effective ways to support James Madison Middle School Tomahawk’s Robotics Team is to sponsor us financially. By contributing monetary support, the team will be able to purchase necessary materials and tools to construct the robot; in return, we offer several benefits, including advertisement space on the robot itself. (See packet for more details about financial support). The team also needs mentors with training and experience, especially in the areas of mechanical design or CAD, in order to get through the six week journey smoothly. Thirdly, sustaining in-kind support through product donations and discounts, allow us to stretch our financial resources even further. Any support offered will help and enrich the James Madison Middle School Tomahawk’s and better ensure that students have opportunities and exposure to areas of science and technology enabling them to prepare and meet the growing demand for technology adept individuals in today’s world.

Here is just a sample of what your support will help pay for:

Tournament registration fees

Robot parts (motors, servos, batteries, structural members, controllers, etc.)

Computer and CAD software

2016-17 FTC field kit and materials

New tools for our workshop

Team shirts

Our goal for the 2016-17 year is to build on what we learned during our rookie season in which I am proud to announce we took 10th place at the Championship Competition in Oviedo, Florida. We plan to build a robot that utilizes sensors for accurate positioning and a more versatile drivetrain for easier movement around the playing field. We also will be using AutoCAD to design and document our robot design.

We hope you will consider becoming a part of our team by providing the financial support we need for the upcoming season. Our team deeply appreciates each and every donation made to support the efforts of our team. Depending on the levels of support you are able to provide, our team would like to thank you with a little something extra.
