Our children - Jan Thomas and Sebastian-, Jan and I are going through the most difficult time of our lives.

What happened
In July 2014 Jan was diagnosed with brain cancer. He had a brain surgery after which he can't walk and he can't communicate. He can say some words if he listens at them first, meaning he can repeat, but cannot combine words to make sentences. He can't write. Sebastian the youngest insists that Jan should write what he wants, but all Jan can do is put some letters with no meaning on paper. Most of the time he does not know how to use his hand or face to make us understand what he wants or needs. Fortunately, he understands what we say to him.

You will find the whole story here.

Some of the problems we are facing
The apartment we live in is full of aisles, and the door of the toilet and kitchen are so narrow that the wheelchair can't get into them. I had to take the bathroom's door out so he can get in. The entrance of the building has 3 steps plus one steep ramp that I have to sort out to take Jan in and out. I tried to rent a house with better conditions for Jan, but the owner would not let us now that none of us are working. Besides, no matter where we live, we need to adapt the house to Jan's present condition. But we can't do that because the house is not ours.

Immediate solutions
Because of these difficulties we decided to buy a house here in Lanzarote. We found a house for sale within a small complex. It has a little garden and a shared pool. That environment will be very good for Jan, I'm sure of that.

How you can help
I created this fundraising page to complete the amount of money we need to buy the house, the basic furniture, a motorized wheelchair (to give Jan a minimum level of independence), adapt the toilet according to Jan's needs, and take him to a speech therapist.

Please help me to help Jan!

Odaly
Jan's wife.

I do not have words to thank you all for your contributions! I started this campaign in an outburst of desperation. I wanted to help Jan, make him feel better (if that is possible), put a smile on his face. I had many questions, thoughts, ideas, but unfortunately all of. . . . .

  • Dear Odaly! I am writing to you as a former math student of Mr Nordgreen. At the British School of Tenerife he was my teacher in year 12 and 13, and I liked to think back of him as the best maths teacher during my school education. Also he always motivated the class in such a positive way, and I remember him telling us about motivational articles, to which I am still thinking back now. It came as a shock to me when I eventually realised that your pledge for donation showing up on my Facebook newsfeed, shared by one of my other former teachers, was about exactly this teacher that I liked to remember so thankfully (for helping us pass through A Levels, even though we had huge gaps about the subject, and for all the great advice given in class). I went on to read your blog about the whole story, and it touched me very much and left me in tears. Reading about all that had happened to your husband and your family brought back memories about the progression of illness of my mother who had also been suffering from cancer. I admire your courage and the way you are coping with the situation. Also I have found something on the internet, which I wanted to show you. I wasn't sure, if this would be helpful in Mr Nordgreen's situation or not (maybe at least until the speech training will show some success?), or if you had already considered something like that, but I thought it would be worth a try to at least send you the link: http://www.tobii.com/en/assistive-technology/global/products/software/compass-20/ I am wishing all the best to you and your family, I am hoping your situation will at least increase to some extend with the donations! Also a Merry Christmas time, I hope you will all be able to have many joyful rounds of card games! Rebecca

  • To all the family, it is indeed so very upsetting to see this image and read the events leading to Jans condition. They say that words have no meaning, but to know that so many people are moved tremendously by the familys situation, shows that you are not alone Jan.I can only say that you be spared as much pain as possible and that economically all the family will not suffer. If you are religious Jan,may you have the courage to fight and the serenity to accept,my prayers are with and for you,my sincerest wishes and hope,Teresa xxxx
