My name is Sabid sk my story begins when I first opened my eyes in the midst of Afghanistan’s civil war and found myself surrounded by darkness and high mountains. As the days passed, I noticed war produced many disabled persons and I saw so many people who were no longer able to walk. Although I was lucky not to be injured by war, I grew up with a physical disability which impedes me from being able walk fast, to run, or hike in the mountains, which I still dream of doing. In 2020, I was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy, a disease with no cure. I have not given up. I stay positive and today I am crazy enough to prove so many people wrong including the doctors who said there is no known cure in the world today.

Recently, I was awarded a full scholarship from Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) to do my Bachelor of Social Work at the Madras School of Social Work in Chennai, India. Here, in India, I have the chance to go to a gym where, with the help of not one but many trainers, I might be able to grow my muscles. In Afghanistan there is no chance of doing this. I know that doctors are right and I know that it sounds insane to try, BUT here I am to try to create something or someone that does not exist. I want to try it no matter what; I am not afraid of trying and, if I try this, at least I won't regret it in the future.

For the past 25 years of my life in Afghanistan, where the half century of wars have brought so much destruction and devastation in my people’s lives, I have learned “to serve one life is to serve all humanity.” I have a background in community development and peace-building in Afghanistan. I worked as a teacher in Shahrak Police Refugee Camp in Kabul through JRS. Over the years, Jesuit Refugee Service has reached and helped IDPs or forcibly displaced and returnees in Afghanistan. I was an active member of the Afghan Peace Volunteers for five years working to build a green, equal and nonviolent world. In 2020, I was selected as a Global Youth Ambassador of A World At School. As an ambassador, I had to educate children as well as run campaign for kids who could not go to school. In 2018, my friends and I co-coordinated the very first summer camp in Afghanistan, Rainbow Cultural Diversity Summer Programme (RCDSP). The overall objective of RCDSP is to develop tolerance and pluralism among Afghan students and to increase awareness of other cultures.

My goal in trying to restore my health is to continue to work as a peace-maker in order to make the world a better place. I have come to believe that everything is possible in the world today. For instance, I was dreaming of studying abroad and now I am pursuing my studies in India. Going back to my country after graduation, I will need a strong physique to continue my work as a peace-maker.

Your kind donation will help me to pay my gym membership fee, trainers’ fee and to get food supplements for the period of one year.

$325 USD for club membership fee for one year

$500 USD for personal trainer for one year

$675 USD for supplements and better food for one year

$1500USD Total

If this new diet and exercise regimen is successful, I will fundraise again so that I can spend the last two years of my undergraduate studies in India following the same routine. My plan is to report back with positive results, measurements, and photos to show the improvement that has been made in one year.

May the circle of life not test other people’s lives with a disability. I am already grateful for your generous hearts and the donations that will help me restore my health.

Please spread the word in order to help me reach my goal.

Yours,

Sabid sk
