TNR Bangkok Soi Cats

Those who have visited Bangkok have most probably noticed the many sad cases of stray cats and dogs that live wild, roaming the city streets. The city of Bangkok may well have the highest number of strays in the world, with an estimated 300,000 cats roaming it's neighbourhoods.It is an ongoing problem, due to the lack of government support for TNR programs [Trap, Neuter & Return].

Unfortunately the overwhelming scale of the problem means that the ideal solution of rescuing and finding homes for these stray animals is totally not possible here. Instead, the best way to reduce the future numbers of the animal population and improve the lives of the remaining animals is through sterilization and vaccination programs, but again, these are limited, and few and far between.

Benefits of TNR -
- Stops the breeding cycle of cats and therefore improves their lives while preventing reproduction; Females don’t go through cycles of producing more and more kittens, thus their health is improved.
- Spaying and neutering virtually eliminates the chance of cats developing mammary or testicular tumors.
- Mating behaviors cease; roaming, yowling, spraying, and fighting.
- Cats’ physical health improves; studies have found that neutering improves feral cats’ coat condition and helps them gain weight.
- Cats are vaccinated; so they’re less susceptible to infectious diseases
- The population stabilizes—no new kittens! Once TNR is in place, the cats will no longer reproduce. The population will stabilize and eventually decline.
- Cats become better neighbors; studies confirm that once TNR stops reproduction, and therefore mating behaviours, the cats’ relationship with residents improves. Colonies become quieter as behaviours like yowling or fighting stop, and community morale improves.

Although costs are considerably lower in Thailand, and a little goes a long way, it is still costly to give even a limited service to these needy animals.There is one lady who can help to TNR the stray cats, and her name is Apple. Her nonprofit organisation aids street animals, primarily cats, by assisting low-income people who cannot afford medical expenses for their pets, with her main focus aiming to reduce the amount of unwanted stray cats/dogs roaming the streets of Thailand. I have been in contact with her, and she is able to help TNR the many soi cats in my area for a small fee of up to 2500 baht per animal (approx AU$97). This service includes trapping the animals humanely, steralising, and being looked after in her home with food and water for a week, to ensure they have healed before they are returned to the street.
