Three Peaks for Abaphumeleli

On 4th November 2017, I will be running the Three Peaks Challenge in Cape Town. A super challenging 50km race up Devils Peak, Table Mountain and Lions Head all in one day. I would like to run this race to raise funds for Abaphumeleli Home of Safety in Khayelitsha, Cape Town's largest township.

Abaphumeleli is run by community leader Evelyn Makasi, who has worked hard to create a beautiful home for the orphaned children in her community. Outside of the main house, a large set of rooms were built using funds from Canada, however there was no electricity or water.

In February, with the support my organisation Project 90 by 2030, I coordinated 'Playing with Solar' a youth leadership project which electrified Evelyn's rooms. Playing with Solar was a very cool project where learners from 10 different schools around Cape Town built solar Lightboxes. A Lightbox uses solar panels to power a battery which provides light and a cell phone charging point. The kids built these from scratch and were tasked with finding beneficiaries for the Lightboxes. Together with some of the kids on the project we installed the Lightboxes at Abaphumeleli and their bedrooms now have light!

Since the Western Cape is experiencing a serious drought, I would now love to raise money to install guttering along the roof (of the same building) and connect it to an existing rainwater tank for watering the vegetable garden. In addition I want to purchase a sink and have a plumber install it in the kitchen area connected to municipal pipes, so that Evelyn and the children of Abaphumeleli have fresh potable water.
