This concept note provides a brief description of an innovative idea for project on how socially responsible young musician with cutting-edge sound can be involved nationally and internationally in raising awareness activities about alarming situation with HIV in The Philippines.
Aden Ray is a Grammy Recording Academy and European Authors' Society recognized singer, songwriter, music producer, influencer, Member of PETA, Grammy 365, STIM, MusiCares, PPL UK and EAU from Northern Europe. Having lived in The Philippines for over a year, Aden Ray had grown to love the culture of The Philippines. He has performed on radio and television shows and participated in numerous social programs during his time in the country. Being socially active and responsible creative person and having the experience of volunteering for NGOs working in the field of HIV prevention, Aden Ray turned his attention to emerging problem of increasing new HIV cases in the Philippines.
Compared with the 342 HIV infections reported in 2007, the 2017 figure is 3,147 percent higher, unlike the other world, where HIV cases has gone down. One of the vulnerable to HIV group is youth. As a potentially sexually active group, young people are not always practice safe sex, causing partly by insufficient information about safe sex measures and partly by absence of open discussion of taboo subjects. Paid medicine and lack of information about HIV prevention programs and free HIV testing sites are another barrier to stop spreading of HIV among young Filipinos. Aden from his personal experience has heard and seen a lot of personal stories of young people, when they got knew about their HIV status too late and died soon.
Now, Aden is hard at work creating a new album that is dedicated to Filipino culture and the Filipino people. While creating the album, Aden decided to link the album and its promotion with HIV prevention by raising awareness about alarming situation with HIV in Philippines and importance of HIV preventive measures to create positive changes and make valuable contributions to Filipino community as whole, and in particular to health of young people and people living with and affected by HIV in The Philippines.
About the album
The project, as a whole, entitled “The Philippines Equality Album” and the album itself, entitled «The Philippines» will feature eleven original songs, including “The Philippines” (in English and Tagalog) as the main single done in several versions (orchestral version, pop version, r&b version, guitar version etc.). Other songs are about “Home,” “Love,” “Unity,” “Diversity,” and “Equality.” All the music on the album will celebrate the various diversity of people who have come together to make the Philippines what it is.
The album will consist of 22 tracks, of which 11 will be original works and 11 other songs will be instrumental versions for karaoke.
The Philippines album will be released and distributed in CD format as well as in digital format on all worldwide music platforms.
As a part of a charity initiative, it is planned to release all 22 songs on YouTube Platform, which means that all of 22 songs (videos) will be available to everyone absolutely free. For some of the 22 songs - will be made music videos, for some - lyric videos and for some, video - audio versions.
Proposed aim and activities
The aim of the proposed activities is to contribute in reducing of new HIV cases in the Philippines by using “The Philippines Equality Album” to promote diversity, social equality and unity as foundation for combating spread of HIV and as an opportunity to encourage young people to use effective HIV preventive measures. In doing so, the artist will be engaged in the voluntary initiatives with the aims to create social change and empower young people to act in order to end HIV spreading in the Philippines.
The core message of the project is to break a taboo around HIV testing among young people and to reduce fear to be blamed and shamed in case of HIV positive result as well as to raise awareness about safe sex and importance of regular HIV testing among young people.
The music itself and songs are important for youth of today. Teens follow their idols, trust what idols say, a lot of the young people emulate them. This give Aden a unique opportunity to show base on his own behavior that there is no shame to get tested for HIV, your own life and destiny should be in your own hands.
Music provides a great platform to promote the message. Aden says: “An influence in the music sphere is the most powerful in the world. My opinion is that music in general holds divinity and has direct connection with the God. Even when the child is still in the womb, it is recommended humming harmonious motifs and listening to good music to calm the child down. The most important thing is trust. So the artist and his music nowadays is trusted, therefore this platform, therefore this channel. And I work in it, I have this opportunity to bring through this divine music channel.”
Many songs of the album are motivating and help young people think positively. “The Philippines Equality Album” and promo events will be used to attract young people attention to the problems by comforting them with their most favorite thing - music and pop culture. This in turn, will create an open space for discussions about sensitive, yet important issues about prevention of HIV.
The duration of the project can be implemented within 3-6 months depending on the range and geography of the activities.
• The backbone events of the project will be concerts and Aden Ray tour in the Philippines in support of the album. The tour will be accompanied by promo materials with socially relevant messages. Social events where the artist will raise important and sensitive for youth issues related to HIV prevention. It is expected to get supported by local stakeholders, community and NGOs working in the field of HIV.
• As part of the album promotional activities, TV and radio talk shows will be used to tell the story of creation of the album, as well as to narrate about the link between HIV and diversity, social equality and unity.
• Concrete activities will be developed based on appropriate options and personal availability and may include public events, interviews, participation in talk-shows, mass-media campaigns, participation in education programs, social marketing campaigns, etc.
An important component of the project will be communication with national stakeholders (mass media, state officials, entertainment, etc.), NGOs and communities vulnerable to or affected by HIV. As part of the charity, social programs and community-led organizations in the Philippines will be supported by getting donations from possible profit from the sales of the album.
