Campaign Story
Providing the small community of Spoegrivier, in the Northern Cape, South Africa, with a Micro Resource Center. Upcycling old shipping containers to provide a tool bank, equipment and material exchange, a meeting place to discuss and encourage local initiatives and a hub for information on opportunities such as bursaries, jobs and training. The community of Spoegrivier is tiny and in a designated Poverty Node. The remote area combined with poverty and climate change is creating huge challenges for this traditional livestock farming community. Virtually no one person can afford to access the things they need to make improvements to their lives. A dedicated space which is owned by the community and where both the community and external benefactors can deposit information, tools, equipment and materials and access to programs, will build community resilience and improve their livelihoods.
The Micro-Resource Center will be two shipping containers, one for storage of equipment and materials and one for wi-fi, brochures and an open discussion space. The first will have a veranda with a small green space, where interested volunteer gardiners can leave cuttings or seedlings for free use by the community. The latter will also have a veranda, outside seating and a notice bulletin board, with trees planted for shade, to create a comfortable and accessible meeting place.
I have worked with this community for three years on a regular basis and their need is to have their own place to gather and discuss, to be able to get access to small things, such as a pair of pliers to fix a fence or information on where to apply for opportunities such as bursaries.
My vision is to establish the Micro Resource Center from two upcycled shipping containers as a starting point, which can be added onto as needs increase and capacity improve.

Update posted by Liza Boonzaaier at 06:22 amThank you, Julia and Mieke - your donation is highly appreciated! To other potential donors - any amount you are willing to donate, will make a real difference to a small and isolated community. If we can get this centre fully funded, local people can have a place to discuss,
