Hello!

We are The Growth Initiative (TGI), an environmental youth organization from the Philippines whose advocacy includes intersectional environmentalism wherein we tackle the different systems and societal issues that affect our advocacy.

To alleviate our worsening air pollution problem and to assist tricycle drivers by reducing their fuel consumption costs, we launched The Carbon Cutter Project in collaboration with Engine EcoPhils Inc.

The Carbon Cutter is a pollution-reducing device by Engine EcoPhils Inc, a Philippine SEC-registered company. The device has also been verified by the Department of Science and Technology, so we know it’s legit.

Each of these patented devices are actually handmade by persons-with-disabilities, and so they are employed in this project as well!

Let’s look at the figures here for a better understanding of how helpful this device is. Installing a carbon cutter unit can reduce pollutions by significant amounts:

  • 5-15% lowered carbon dioxide pollution
  • 50-80% lowered fine particulate matter pollution
  • 35-80% lowered hydrocarbon pollution

Aside from its environmental benefits, the Carbon Cutter also reduces fuel consumption by up to 20%. For some tricycle drivers, this can mean saving P300 (around 6 USD) per month, possibly even more. These savings are a huge boost for them - especially given their decreased income during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Wondering who this project is for? Our beneficiaries are tricycle drivers from the Loyola Heights and Loyola Pansol Tricycle Operators and Drivers Associations (TODAs) who operate in the Katipunan area of Quezon City in Metro Manila, and they used to make the majority of their income by servicing students from the schools in the area. Due to the changes brought about by the pandemic, the shift to online learning this school year has caused the tricycle drivers to lose a large part of their income.

One unit only costs P1,200 (around 25 USD) to manufacture and install on a tricycle. We aim to install Carbon Cutters on all 340 tricycles of the Loyola Heights and Loyola Pansol TODAs. Currently, we have raised enough funds for 75 Carbon Cutter units on their tricycles, and the drivers have given positive feedback about the unit.

You can watch some of their testimonials on Engine EcoPhils’ Youtube Page: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-d7N7UOpqo

This is the part where YOU come in! We need your help in raising more funds to equip all the tricycles with Carbon Cutter units. Our current goal of P175,000 (3,500 USD) on Go Get Funding is conservative, as we are also trying to raise funds through our social media accounts. This amount will hopefully cover the remaining 265 tricycles that we aim to provide with Carbon Cutter units.

All funds will be used to manufacture and install the Carbon Cutter units onto the tricycles. We have a projects team that is focused on this endeavor, and we will provide constant updates as more Carbon Cutters are installed and as new developments arise.

If you want to learn more and hear from the tricycle drivers themselves, you can watch our video on our project here: The Carbon Cutter: Reducing Pollution While Saving Money - YouTube.
