We all know that bookstores seem to be disappearing in recent years, but why is that? Contrary to popular belief, it's not the rise of the digital format - many people still prefer paper books, and indeed, paper media has been on the rise. What really kills local bookstores is their business model and community engagement; stores that treat themselves as purely retail spaces suffer and struggle because books aren't consumables, and very few bookstores think to engage their communities in other ways. Furthermore, many bookstores are physically or sensorily inaccessible, severely limiting access for disabled people.

We are a team of passionate readers and writers who want to break this pattern for ourselves and our community. Based in our mutual hometown of Natick, MA, we aim to open a local bookstore with a focus on accessibility, inclusivity, and community building. We are woman-owned, queer-owned, Jewish-owned, and disability-owned. Our mission is to increase access to literature and culture in our area and to create a welcoming space for people to connect.

Our business model will not be based on mass-market paperbacks and tchotchkes. Instead, our focus will be on:

  • strong, diverse literature in all genres
  • community events such as author talks, social groups, and workshops
  • genuine accessibility for all, especially our most marginalized neighbors
  • building partnerships with local businesses and nonprofits
  • equitable treatment of staff, including competitive pay, benefits, and supports

We believe that we're ready and that we have a great idea and the passion and resourcefulness to see it through; what we lack is the funds! Please help us to realize our dream and improve our beloved community!

WHO WE ARE:

Sarah Liz Sidney (she/they) is not merely passionate about literature - she created her own major around it! With a BA in Young Adult Fantasy and a zest for far-fetched ideas, Sarah Liz is the creative mind behind this venture and the one who dreams big. As a queer disabled person, she knows all too well how hard it can be to find a welcoming space to read and learn, and she's dreamed of opening a bookstore for many years.

Jo Rothman (they/them) has literally been reading longer than they've been hearing! Born Deaf, they were reading before their hearing improved enough to forgo hearing aids, and they remain fonder of the written word than the spoken. A meticulous editor and administrator, Jo is the counterweight to Sarah Liz's sky-high ideas and the one who maintains the little details. Being queer, trans, and multiply disabled, their greatest passion is social justice at the community level, and they can't wait to get into the nitty-gritty of making this space the best it can be!

Sarah Liz and Jo have been friends for eleven years, since they were in high school. Their friendship was cemented by reading and writing together, and after several other projects together, they're ready to try their hand at this biggest challenge yet!
