The Haven: For the Culture

PURPOSE: As a black expat I have lived and worked for nearly a decade in Taiwan as a teacher and entrepreneur, working to bring more people of color to the second safest country in the world. But for all the great things that the island has to offer, there is still something missing. Something for us. Built by us, led by us, and catered to us. Those of us who struggle to find and buy hair care products, or simply getting a lining.

Those of us who want to listen to our music, with our people, on our own terms without the slight insertion of techno music every third song. Those of us who go to work every day and come home every day to people who don’t look like us, and don’t fully understand our culture or our needs as people of color in a foreign land. Those of us that have accepted our new home, but are still seeking something that feels a little more like home while far away from the place we first called home.

The Haven we've worked to create and build is needed in many places throughout the world. Back home we find it in little things like skating rinks, barbershops, rec centers, and more. But in the new places we make home, like Taiwan, these are needed. These are needed so that the next time a person considers making the leap abroad they feel that much more secure, that much more supported, and that much more hopeful, because they know they have a Haven. Our haven will encompass all of these things and more. The things that are needed for the growing Black Expat community in Taiwan.

Contribution Ask:

1. Sponsorship and donations to assist with the marketing, building development, supplies, and start up for the Haven. This includes development, construction, interior/exterior development, and additional startup needs.
