Theatre Appreciation Club

Who We Are:

We are two NYC public high school history teachers, at Manhattan Hunter Science High School, who regularly use theater and role-play in the classroom to enhance student engagement in learning. With the recent popularity of TV singing competitions and shows like Glee, we have discovered a niche of students who would love to attend musicals but do not have the opportunity.

What We're About:

We are seeking funds to subsidize the cost of bringing small groups of students to see Broadway musicals each month of the calendar school year. We hope to be able to cut the cost of each ticket by 30-50% for each student, making it possible for more students to have a chance to attend a Broadway musical and perhaps with some regularity.

Our Goal:  $10,000*

What We Will Do:

• Subsidize the ticket cost for groups of students to attend Broadway musicals
• Purchase the Broadway cast recording of each musical we plan to see and make copies for every student so that they can get to know the music and the story before attending
• Expose students to musicals and build the next generation of NYC born-and-bred-theater-goers

We know, as many patrons of the arts know, that theatrical experiences transmit lessons about appreciating art as well as ettiquite and participating in your own city's vibrant offerings. By donating to our Theater Appreciation Club, you are making it possible for a student to have, what we hope, will not just be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but the beginning of a long, fulfilling relationship with the NYC theater community.

Educationally, we hope that attendance and participation in these experiences will inspire confidence and motivation in student academic performance, and a furthered sense of community amongst our students.

*We have chosen this financial goal due to the variability of ticket prices and available dates for Broadway musicals. Unlike other education fund-raising sites, we have chosen direct fund-raising to allow us flexibility in the use of funds and to achieve the outcomes listed above. We hope to be able to bring up to 20 students per trip, the dollar amount represents the cost of subsidizing tickets for 9 trips over the course of the 2012-2013 school year.
