The Vaginarium will be a giant, extravagant vagina slide (approximately 3m high) made out of timber and plywood with an LED display representing the clitoris which will light up when a button (symbolic of the ever-illusive g-spot) is pushed by the often overly-eager slider. There will be a "pink tent*" built inside the base of The Vaginarium of Dreams which will be a safe space for womxn to gather, share and receive the ancient teachings and wisdom of the divine feminine with daily guided talks and sacred ceremonies. There will also be materials available to write stories or paint a picture of your sacred flower illustrating the beauty of vaginas in all shapes, forms, colours and sizes which will be displayed in the pink tent.
As an artwork, The Vaginarium represents the rebirth of our society – through sliding down the sacred vaginal canal – as well as celebrates and embodies the divine feminine through dancing, singing, playing, laughing, creating, embracing, communicating, and story telling. The idea was born during the most pertinent time of the gender based violence epidemic experienced in our own country of South Africa and felt worldwide in 2019. Therefore, as much as The Vaginarium commemorates the divine feminine it is a stand to protect this too. We aim to bring awareness to the patriarchal crisis that diminishes the beauty and strength of the life giving force that is the vagina and hope to spark the right conversations.
We believe that this artwork will help bring into balance the energies of the divine masculine and the divine feminine needed for us to heal from the outdated patriarchal systems which have for so long kept these sacred energies out of balance. Thus we see The Vaginarium of Dreams as a celebration of the divine feminine and the sacred energy which can be harnessed to drive both great healing and great change in our society.
The Vaginarium is the dream of 7 powerful South African womxn. A group of loving best friends, sisters, soul flames whose complimentary skills cover engineering, property development and project management, photography, graphic design and web development, entrepreneurship, sustainability, film production management and co-ordination. We all have something to say, something to share, in our experiences of being modern womxn. Through The Vaginarium we come together to express these voices and create a space for our Afrikaburn community to partake in this exercise too.
*The idea of the "pink tent" is based on a novel called The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. The book's title refers to the tent in which women of Jacob's tribe must, according to the ancient law, take refuge while menstruating or giving birth, and in which they find mutual support and encouragement from their mothers, sisters and aunts. It is still a common feature in other pre-modern cultures, as well as some modern cultures and we wish to pay homage to this sacred space.
