The (Un)Governed Body is choreographed and directed by 2018 Silpathorn Award winner Teerawat Mulvilai (“Manoland,” “Fundamental,” “Red Tank,” “Iceberg,” “The Other Land”), B-Floor Theatre’s latest production, “The (Un)Governed Body,” is developed from “Trance I: The (Un)Governed Body,” which was staged last May as a work-in-progress performance. Trance was born out of the director’s interest in the recent popularity and prevalence of spiritual mediums in Thailand. Last year, Teerawat and the performers explored the body and mind in various states—trance, meditative, susceptible, and powerless. The first phase of development posed questions about freedom of the body, mind, and thought and involved structured feedback sessions with audience members.

Teerawat and part of the original cast returned early this year to develop the project into a full-scale production. The second phase of development began with experiments with materials, such as aluminum wires, rubber tubes, nylon stocking fabric, and thermal blankets. Material exploration opened doors to experiments with design and director-performers collaboration and widened the concept beyond the issues tackled in the first phase of the process to include issues of memory, identity, and migration. “The (Un)Governed Body” asks questions about bodies that constantly have to face, negotiate, and struggle with foreign entities or identities inside themselves, which sometimes cause these bodies harm, sometimes endow them with power or sacredness, and sometimes rob them of autonomy.

“The (Un)Governed Body” will have its world premiere in Japan as part of Storehouse Collection No. 15: Physical Theatre Week Vol. 1: Thinking about Body of Tomorrow (August 28–September 1), which also features performances from Japan and South Korea. In Thailand, “The (Un)Governed Body” will be staged at Saeng Arun Art and Culture Centre for 10 performances from September 13 to September 22. The production has also been invited to perform in Indonesia at Karawang Dance Festival 2019 (September 26–29).

We're still short on our cost of production, such as rehearsal & performing space rental fee, light and sound system for performances in Thailand. Your support will not only make the production possible, but will also give more opportunities for Thai performing arts to grow. We believe arts is important. We believe arts help our countries and society.
