The Squealer Festival Budget

Hello and welcome to The Squealer Festival Budget Fundraiser!

I'm your fundraiser host, Flynn O'Connor. I'm the editor of The Squealer though rightly told, this story starts with two men, Christopher P. Obal and William J. Sparks.

When Chris and Bill (Christopher and William, to the public, that is) came to me originally with The Squealer they already had a full feature under their belt. There were a few local screenings, I had been told, and surprisingly, they needed it shorter. Tighter. Make the editing part of the Daniel Brady character. I really went for it! Sometime later we had the beginnings of an hour and a half gem.

Not unlike our main character, Daniel Brady we were revolutionary, before we considered ourselves revolutionaries and it shows. Many of the transcendental "European cinema style" ideas we had about cutting and arranging this this film have crept out into the world and become more common. Psychedelic overlays, far-out colors, sequence shifts and audio estrangement (Westworld, Twin Peaks, Blade Runner 2049) have become somewhat the norm. It's a hallmark we proudly portray: our central character is going through some severe dissociative problems! It's time for the world to glimpse The Squealer, it is split worldwide not unlike The Squealer's Daniel Brady.

As of 2008, Daniel is involved in some form of protest movement. He is an informant for the government. His testimony has landed fellow activists in prison. He is living under the protection of the federal witness program, and chafes at the vigilance of his handler. The Squealer can be described as a psychological thriller, however; its roots are much deeper: it is a rallying cry for the community to ask the following questions:

What is actually going on today? What is this age in which we live? When and how will this promised revolution take place? What can we do in the intervening time, which is superfluous? And what are we, we who are living in this transition?

Christopher Obal is currently a graduate student and TA at the University of Colorado. He has been single-handedly Executive Producing The Squealer which was written and directed by Bill Sparks, for a number of years. There are opportunities via this fundraiser for us to help him out and form a better community around the importance of film. In these days and in this political climate, maybe film is the only way we can "Squeal!"

Chris has been simply amazing to work for. As an artist and as a friend, I love how he makes decisions both from the head and from the heart. He's been willing to try a lot of techniques that would fluster a lot of lesser producers and the film is better for it, for sure. I really want him to know this fundraiser is for him. He's been scraping so long for all of the artists involved in this project, I wanted to help give him a break. Crowdfunding a festival run like this is the right answer.

Anyone who knows Bill Sparks knows, he is a positive force in this community and beyond. His influence is felt by everyone that knows him. He is a guiding hand to young people in the collegiate and art house communities in Austin, Texas. More, this film is an important historical and community piece for both the activist community and anyone affected by the modern police state. Which is to say, all of us! Further, it is an example of why the Texas Film Commission and its related Film in Texas Resources MUST EXIST! The Creative Community rallies around film. Let's keep it going ourselves if we have to!

This festival budget fundraiser will allow us to do the following:

Improve the screening quality of the film by providing a series of DCP's to theaters (increasing in quality);

Follow through on The Squealer's placement into the Big Mini Film Festival, allowing us to hold a meet-the-creators event with Christopher at Long Island University where the Big Mini Festival is being held! The screening takes place on Saturday November 11, at 5PM at LIU and we'd like Chris to attend!

Respond to the Russian Film Festival (Moscow Film Fest) - (Yes, we hope to approach Edward Snowden if we screen in Moscow)

Translate the film's subtitles into a variety of languages facilitating new festival screenings;

Maximize the potential for online distribution via a number of material transcodes;

Improve The Squealer's social media range and worth, thereby allowing a greater community discussion to occur, also to better take advantage of Film Festival Screenings by raising awareness of the film's intent to both Fest attendees and volunteers;

Increase the film's ever-increasing social media worth which allows distributors, producers and collaborators alike to see a level of success going into distribution;

Trailer recuts to fit new demographic data gleaned from online views, synonymous with advertisement;

Film Festival entry fees, Interviews with the director, producer and more!

I am so proud of Chris, Bill and the entire cast and crew of The Squealer for coming this far. Let's not let them down! This year and into the next should begin the best years for The Squealer yet! However no film comes without a level of community support!

Without films like this one, It’s easy to forget that the rein on public discourse regarding police brutality, torture, violation of privacy, and the like, has been almost impossible to loosen in our time. We approach a community crisis of epic proportion, and Daniel Brady, The Squealer, is here to take point.

Let's help Chris and Bill release this film to the world, and let's appreciate the discourse it will bring!
