Campaign Story
Hi,
We are Kate and Alan Burrows. We have owned our 8.5 acre piece of Devon countryside for 9 years now, and during that time it has always been our dream to live simply on and with the land and wildlife. Living a low impact off grid lifestyle. Using permaculture practices to grow our small holding. One year ago we were forced to leave our house in Somerset, and so with no option we decided that the time to start our new life on the land was then.
We moved all of our belongings in a small caravan down to the field and set up camp. Small but cosy. Our youngest son who lives with us was about to start college in Exeter so what better time. To our dismay within 3 months of being on the site the local planning enforcement officer was here demanding that we leave within the next 6 weeks.
So within that time we and a number of our friends built a dwelling that was to become the house we now live in. This meant that they could not evict us from our own land so easily. Before the planning enforcement officer returned we were able to put in a planning application for our dwelling and the compost toilet.
We believe that the decision by the local council planning was made to refuse our planning straight away. So within 8 weeks we had a refusal notice. We then started the process of lodging a planning appeal which is still ongoing. However within a few weeks of our planning appeal being lodged the local planning enforcement have been back and served us with a planning enforcement notice requiring us to remove all traces of our beautiful home and life on the land.
This is where we need your help please. The cost of the enforcement appeal is £800 which is a considerable amount to us. Further costs for the appeal could run into considerably more however as we may need professional help.
Our future plans are to build a model small holding working with nature and the environment to prove how a sustainable low impact lifestyle can be achieved. Also to teach others how to build a better environmental future for you, us and all our children. And to do that we need to win the appeal.
Any extra money raised will help towards the legal costs the appeal.
Please help us to achieve this goal the only way we can do it is with your help.

The house is amazing- built in 6 weeks! Please let's give people the chance to live lightly on the land- rather than cover it with soulless clone developments. Whilst planners persecute you they allow the big developers to cover the land with concrete and give our children cramped, manufactured places to live. best of luck to you both,
