Join our mission to protect the women of Ghana!
Can you believe there is not a single women’s shelter in the whole of Ghana, a beautiful country in West Africa with a population of more than 28 million people? It is even more shocking when considering the high prevalence of domestic and sexual violence in the country. More than one-third of Ghanaian women and girls experience violence at the hands of an intimate partner. For economic, cultural and religious reasons, families rarely support these victims, trapping them in a cycle of violence and shame.
Since beginning our project, many women and girls have come looking to us for help. We would like to share with you a recent story so that you understand the gravity and urgency of the work we are trying to do. "L" is a 15-year-old girl who dreams of being an actress. She is desperately in need of rescue. She contacted us after having been pulled out of her secondary school and given in marriage against her will to a man twice her age. We understood the urgency of physically moving L out of danger, but with our safe house still under construction, we had nowhere to shelter her. The next part of the story is sadly one far too common in Ghana. We were forced to trust L's uncle, who promised to look after her and allow her to go back to school. Only days later, that same uncle who promised he would protect her, personally gave L back to the husband. Despite our best efforts, we have not been able to find her since...
While this is L's story, it is one known to countless women and girls on a daily basis. We were not able to rescue her in time. We cannot let this happen again, but we need YOUR help!
ABOUT US - The Pearl Safe Haven
We founded the The Pearl Safe Haven in 2018 and, with our very talented team, are building a women’s shelter in the outskirts of the capital, Accra.
Our team consists of lawyers, financial experts, psychologists, project managers, and IT specialists - All highly talented and committed to helping to protect and empower women in Ghana!
We are nearly finished with the building! Our main goal now is to raise funds to cover our running costs for the first year and establish livelihood training projects for the women. With your support, we will finish this project by the end of August 2020 and can finally offer a safe environment for women with all services needed to begin again away from the violent oppression of their abusers.
The Vision and Mission of The Pearl Safe Haven
The vision of The Pearl Safe Haven is to establish a safe place for young female survivors of domestic abuse to rebuild their lives.
The Safe Haven can house as many as 25 women at a time. These women will undergo a 3-month, on-site comprehensive recovery programme including access to free medical, psychological and legal support. The program also includes life-skills and vocational training to prepare for successful reintegration into society. After completion, the women will still receive support and monitoring for a further 6 months post their residency at The Safe Haven.
Women will be referred to the Pearl by Ghana’s Domestic Violence Victim Support Unit and we will work closely with Social Welfare, the Ministry for Gender and coalition partners including Obaapa Development and WILDAF to ensure a successful outcome for every survivor.
