Decolonizing Mental Health

Greetings,

While many wrestle with the question - “what am I doing with my life”, I was challenged to explore what my life has been doing with me. In accepting this challenge I have come to realize that as early as I can remember I’ve been charged, trusted and gifted to care for others as a healer, as an educator, artist, musician, writer, storyteller. And now it is time to take my natural abilities to the next level.

I am now on a journey of becoming a graduate level student, obtaining my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, combined with the knowledge of the use of Plants as Medicines. And although the combination of the two may seem like a new discovery to some, the research shows that certain plants are unlocking doors of unprecedented results in healing neuro-psychiatric conditions ranging from; depression to opioid addiction, and disorders ranging from social anxiety to depression., which has been known by many in small communities around the world for hundreds of years.

I now know that my purpose is to nurture and guide others, and to assist those that struggle with mental health issues, but are not able to receive adequate assistance due to financial lack. I know that because I have been that person, and wish that experience on no man, woman or child, ever. To be told that because they are not able to afford help, that they do not deserve it. Or that to simply "Just get some rest" would solve their problems because they are "a strong black [woman]" without the consideration of being human before a color.

Therefore, I am ecstatic about the opportunity to embark on this journey to represent the underrepresented, via becoming a member of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling profession. In addition to being granted the opportunity to personify the assistance you are providing, as to show what financial support could do as a practical solution for those seeking to assist and work in the Mental Health Care field and sphere of influence
