My organization will help children of all ages (as young as 4 years old) in impoverished areas of Memphis, TN with reading and writing by starting a program that teaches them to read, report and write the news around them. It will be all youth staffed newspaper titled The New Notion. I plan on having this newspaper available to print for readers to read all over the mid-south. I want it to be free and have children volunteer to work on their special section of the paper that will be age appropriate. I have a Bachelors of Arts in print journalism and experience freelance writing for The Commerical Appeal, Memphis Parent, Grace Magazine as well as many other publications out of state and online. I am also a mother of seven, a former health outreach worker for Porter-Leath Childrens Center and former Assistant Teacher at La Petite Academy. I will be the editor n chief and the only adult on staff, teaching, guiding and fostering a love of reading and writing within these children. I also believe that the children on staff for my newspaper as well as the children who will pick up and read what their peers have written will do better in school and on their TCAP reading and writing scores. I am eager to advertise and get started but need funding for my idea.If you could help me fund my project your money will go to advertising, printing, computers and computer software as well as quite possibly a space if I find one affordable outside of my home. I also plan on taking this newspaper to other cities with children in impoverished areas after the success of this one in Memphis, TN.
