“The King of Azteca”, an original, new musical conceived and directed by Joshua Bechtel transports us to the height of the colorful and mystical world of Mesoamerica, where the reluctant
Prince Acalan is set to inherit the throne. Little does he know that an evil and maniacal Medicine
Man (Tenoch) has other plans for him and his families future. Acalan’s loyalties are tested in this
unique coming-of-age story of power, envy, courage and love.
“The biggest challenge was people believing that we were actually writing a full-scale, original Musical or that we could have it ready in 9 months”, says Bechtel who is now rehearsing with a 50+ member cast and crew in preparations for its debut May 23rd -25th. “We are unbelievably excited to see this begin to come to life!” After his initial concept work was complete, the book and songs began to take shape last summer when he solicited two young, talented collaborators Makayla Allen to help with lyrics and David Heras as co-writer. What developed was a unique story set in an rich, ancient world with a musical mix that taps from not only its cultural traditions but also more modern styles such as blues and Jazz to deliver the message. Bechtel, who is also working on the final costume and set designs is gearing up for the ambitious musical production. However he finds himself blown-away by it’s evolution and what this young cast and crew are building together from ground zero. “We feel audiences who see this will be amazed at what a group of young artists can achieve”.
