Dear Family and Friends,
I will be volunteering in Guatemala at the end of January for 2 or 3 months and I am humbly asking you all to help me make this experience as productive and enriching as possible!
Who Am I Volunteering For?
Serving as the only source of health services to 10 impoverished communities in the Palajunoj Valley of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, the Non-Governmental Organization Primeros Pasos aims to improve the quality of life of these rural communities through integrated health education programs and access to medical services. Primeros Pasos incorporates and combines clinical care, health education, and community outreach programs to effectively provide preventative and primary care.
Why Do I Want to Go?
I want a career in the Global Public Health field because I want to become a Health Care Educator-- I believe that the core for short-term and long-term development of any society is dependent upon healthcare and education: if people aren't healthy, they cannot study or work, and thus, making a living for themselves and their families becomes extremely difficult.
I want to teach communities both in the United States and all over the world how to have proper hygiene, about sexual reproduction and contraception, family planning, and how to confront cultural and social hardships (drugs, gangs, alcohol, coming from broken families); I want to teach kids at a young age as well women how to build SELF-WORTH, SELF-ESTEEM, and SELF-CONFIDENCE, inspiring them to become EMPOWERED and MOTIVATED to choose a life enhanced by education and employment. By giving the individuals of communities the tools to develop these skills in order to become productive contributing members of society, the entire community as a whole is collectively strengthened and equipped to sustain LONG-TERM DEVELOPMENT—eliminating violence, drug/alcohol abuse, poverty and creating more security, education, more community support, and more success.
While volunteering for Primeros Pasos, I will get to experience first-hand how to work to achieve the goal of long-term development of a community by working alongside doctors, nurses, dentists, project managers and developers and see what these jobs really entail!
What Will I Be Doing?
I will be an Education Volunteer—creating and giving workshops both on-site in the clinic as well as in the 10 local elementary schools to children K-6th grade on a wide range of health topics including nutrition, natural disasters, domestic violence, and puberty. These workshops will be conducted in the Spanish language.
After the workshop, the children will receive a medical and dental check-up either at the Primeros Pasos clinic or in the mobile-clinic.
The Significance of Your Contribution
In addition to helping me cover my living expenses while volunteering in Guatemala, you will be making an immensely valuable contribution to Primeros Pasos, allowing the organization to continue providing much needed healthcare services and educational programs.
Statistics:
• Guatemala suffers from the 2nd highest maternal mortality rate in Latin America with at 290 deaths per 100,000 live births (World Bank 2008).
• About 65% of mothers of malnourished children have no formal education, and less than 20% of mothers with a secondary education have malnourished children (Center for Economic and Social Rights, 2009).
What Your Donation Provides:
• $10 provides comprehensive clinical care and health education to a child for one year.
• $20 provides anti-parasite medication for 1,500 children.
• Just $50 a month covers laboratory supplies used to diagnose and treat patients.
• $65 provides cervical cancer screenings for 25 women.
• $100 covers the cost of transportation for a weeklong Mobile Clinic.
Any Donation Will Help!
Any donation big or small will be sincerely and extremely appreciated! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!
With Much Gratitude,
Jamie
