On July 30, 2012, twenty?four?year?old Kelcey Harrison began running the 3,500 miles from Boston to San Francisco to spread awareness and raise money to help beat the cancer that took her friend Jillian Costello’s life just weeks after their college graduations.

Jill Costello, an otherwise healthy non-smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer when she was 21 and died at age 22, after a hard fought 13-month battle. In the last year of her life, Costello was named Pac-10 Women’s Athlete of the Year, graduated from Cal Berkeley with a 4.0 GPA and led the Cal Women’s Crew team to a National Championship.

What's more, in the last 6 months of her life, Jill became part of something larger than herself. She worked with the San Francisco based Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation organizing a charity run in Golden Gate Park, she spoke at Genentech, a cancer research firm, exchanged e-mails with half a dozen other cancer patients nationwide and was interviewed on NPR as a voice of nonsmoker lung-cancer sufferers.

"Jill’s diagnosis and consequent activism opened all of our eyes to the stigma that has kept lung cancer at the same survival rate for the past 40 years."

Lung Cancer is the biggest cancer killer but still the least funded. Much of this is due to the fact that people believe Lung Cancer is a smokers disease. In fact over 20% of women who are diagnosed with lung cancer have never touched a cigarette. Lung Cancer kills more people than breast, colon, liver, melanoma and kidney cancers combined, but for every $9 spent on Breast Cancer research, only $1 is spent on Lung Cancer in the U.S.

“My best friend, a young, athletic, non-smoker died of lung cancer,” Kelcey explains. "Perhaps this is just one small way that I can make a difference in this world, in someone’s life, and to make her proud."

The money Kelcey raises will go to the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation, and its unstoppable young people’s movement – Jill’s Legacy for Lung Cancer Research. Kelcey's goal is to raise $250,000 and as the last days of her run come to a close, the amount donated is $150,000.

Please support Kelcey's efforts and make a donation to the Great Lung Run!
