Campaign Story
Plastic pollution has become a prevalent environmental issue especially in the Philippines. Its effects has already undeniably affected the environment and taken away human lives. On 2011, a flashflood hit our city claiming 25 people; 2 years later, it happened again specifically in my town, flooding the school and houses nearby the river and just recently, on December of 2017, a typhoon hit our city, flooding villages which caused the people lose their houses and source of income. The trash being collected after the unfortunate event was overwhelming. The debris was mostly made of plastics which causes the rivers and canals to remain stagnant.
The Brick It On Project aims to mitigate and reduce the amount of plastics being thrown into the ocean and rivers through transforming these plastics into ecobricks. An ecobrick is a plastic bottle packed solid with non-biological waste to make a reusable building block. It can be used to construct plant boxes, home furniture, or use them to nurture green spaces in your backyard and school gardens.
The Brick It On Project already had its launching on July of 2017, mobilizing 4 schools in our community to start making ecobricks in their respective school. A part of the project also is to raise awareness across communities about plastic pollution. However, the project is currently on hiatus due to lack of resources such as caulk guns and cements to start the infrastructural procedure. A part of the project also is to raise awareness about plastic pollution through symposiums and seminars across communities which also needs monetary funding and support.
