The Atria of Potentiaal

While planning the renovation of the Potentiaal building located in the TU/e campus in Eindhoven, we wanted to design a green building with character. A building that is environmentally friendly, provides for itself, creates awareness and makes people rethink their beliefs and ideals.

We don’t envision the Potentiaal as a simple building, made of bricks and mortar, glass and steel. The heart of this structure is not the different building materials that form its outer shell, but the people leaving and breathing in it. A smart design assists the users to have control of their environment and at the same time influences their behaviour, attitude and mental state and clearly articulates the link between sustainability and the human factor.

An idea of an atrium that promotes the green image of the building itself and of the TU/e campus as well came quite early during the design process. It is a place where people meet and interact but at the same time plays a significant role in the physics of the building, by reducing the energy demand and at the same time acting as the medium through which natural light travels deeper into the building, casting the shadows away. At its base lies an exhibition centre, where innovative technologies, either immature or already in the market are exhibited. From the solar tree to Luminescent Solar Concentrators and windows that produce artificial sunlight, this is the place where visitors can have a glimpse of tomorrow.

The challenges of such an endeavor are complex. The demolition of the existing floors is an expensive process. We kindly invite you to contribute to the funding of our recent design. The Atrium of the Potentiaal building located inside the TU/e Campus in Eindhoven!
