We are a group of Juliet Tembe’s friends, based at the University of British Columbia, Canada, who are supporting a remarkable educator at a critical time. Our Ugandan friend is an outstanding teacher, scholar, and community activist, who has promoted literacy in sub-Saharan Africa for the past four decades as well as fighting HIV/AIDS through her work on the Board of TASO. After completing her doctorate in Language and Literacy Education at UBC, Juliet became the Ugandan in-country coordinator of the innovative African Storybook Project, which draws on technology to promote early literacy for African children.

Having devoted her life to the service of others, Juliet is now fighting a soft tissue sarcoma in her upper left leg. It is a high grade leiomyosarcoma which is very aggressive. She has sought medical treatment in Uganda, South Africa, and India. She urgently needs funds to help cover the considerable costs of her treatment, and we will be deeply grateful for any donations for a much loved and widely respected friend and colleague.

Financial Accountability

We have set a goal of $25,000, based on advice and information Juliet has received from her doctors on how much it will all cost. She cannot get all the help she needs in Uganda and so she has been travelling outside Uganda to India as well as to other countries, where she is supported by friends while not in hospital. We hope to reach our goal within the stated time-frame of three months. Should we be so fortunate to exceed our goal, all funds will go to Juliet so she can set is aside for any future health concerns. She has already been told that she cannot get health insurance in Uganda so she needs to have a back-up fund.

Your generous donations will be periodically transferred from stripe and paypal to a bank account specially set up at TD Canada Trust and then wired to Juliet in Uganda, India or where-ever she is receiving treatment. Three of her friends, listed on this page, are administering the funds, which will be held to the highest levels of scrutiny and accountability.

Marissa Alexander Released from Prison;
Supporters Celebrate, Demand FULL FREEDOM!

Supporters of Marissa Alexander in Jacksonville, across the US, and all around the world are overjoyed that she has been released from jail after serving 3 years behind bars for defending her life. In 2010, Marissa Alexander, a black mother of three from Jacksonville, Florida, was forced to defend her life from a life-threatening attack by her estranged husband by firing a single warning shot that caused no injuries. State Prosecutor Angela Corey prosecuted Marissa, pursuing a 60 year mandatory minimum sentence. On November 24, 2014, Marissa accepted a plea deal that included time served of nearly 3 years in prison, 65 additional days in the Duval County jail, and 2 years of probation while under home detention. January 27, 2015 marked the end of her time behind bars.

We are thrilled that Marissa will finally be reunited with her children, her family, and her community. Today’s hearing revealed that Marissa intends to attend school to become a paralegal and she is a wonderful mother to her children who urgently need her. Amazingly, the State continued their campaign of punishment by trying to add two more years of probation on top of the two years of house detention included in the plea. Fortunately, they failed. Marissa and her family will need time to begin recovering from this arduous and traumatic experience. It’s been a long and painful journey and, though her release from jail is definitely a win -- no 60 years -- the journey of seeking ultimate freedom is not over. Marissa will be forced to be on strict home detention while being under surveillance for two years. This is by no means freedom in the sense we feel she deserves. Our next agenda is to seek full restoration for Marissa and her family, including the expunging of her so-called criminal record, and a systemic transformation that prevents black women and all survivors of domestic violence from experiencing the hostile and brutal treatment from policing, prosecution, and prison systems that Marissa has endured. We will push for improved legislation and monitoring of systems that penalize victims of domestic violence who choose to save their lives by force. This is by no means a conclusion. Hi, seems to be a bug when listing a campaign that customer service rep replicated:

"I have twice tried to set up a fundraiser on the site, and on both occasions have got to the bottom of page 2 and on each occasion everything goes well to the point... and then the button for save ad continue appears to do nothing.
