The family and friends of Maureen Smith are uniting to raise money to help Maureen and her family in this time of need. Maureen Smith News - March 6, 2014 Hello from Team Maureen! The exciting picture above was taken Thursday, March 6, 2014 at the conclusion of Maureen’s appointment with the amazing Dr. V. The smiles are due to the results of Maureen’s PET scan and MRI. All tests have come back with great results and Dr. V has released Maureen from any continued chemotherapy or radiation! Maureen will continue to undergo scans every two months for a good period of time. She will also turn her attention to the hard job of regaining as much of her physicality as possible and starting to work towards a normal lifestyle. The Doctors are confident that whatever long term physical therapy program is designed, Maureen will attack it with the same energy and resolve that has supported her to this point. Andy and Maureen are immensely thankful for your support and the love and care of the extended community. It is important to them that you know just how much the accumulated support has carried them through the worst of times. Thank you! The needs of the family will continue unabated. Team Maureen plans to keep the www.maureensmith.org site active for financial donations. We also encourage you to visit the site to post words of care and comfort. Please know that any message you post there is viewed directly by the family and all messages are most welcome. Team Maureen will continue to plan for Spring/Summer activities the details of which we will share soon. But for now, we join Andy and Maureen in sending heartfelt thanks for the enormous support you have all provided during the daunting challenges which have faced the Smith family, your efforts are truly appreciated. Yours in Joy, Team Maureen Maureen Smith News - Christmas - Double your impact updated 12-23-2013 Happy Holidays from Maureen, Andy and Team Maureen! On behalf of Maureen and Andy, we send you this message of glad tidings and sincere best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season. We hope you will enjoy 2014 as a prosperous, joyous and peaceful new year. There is joyful news for us to share - Maureen had another successful MRI today! Maureen’s results continue to impress her medical team and bring great hope for the future. Shortly after Christmas, Maureen will begin her fourth segment of chemotherapy. In March of 2014, Maureen will have another major test and assuming the present results are sustained, Maureen may be able to abbreviate future chemo segments. She would then be free to focus other objectives - chief among those is to regain more of her health, starting a new phase of physical therapy to restore lost abilities and continuing to work towards normalcy in her daily activities. The costs of operating a household, handling medical bills and various other unusual expenses continue to be a large burden for the Smith family. In the hopes of addressing part of that, Thomas Byrne Associates has agreed to match any and all donations made at the www.maureensmith.org site between today and 1/4/2014. Please take this opportunity to double the impact of your generous donation in support of Maureen. Please also share this message with others who could be interested having their generosity multiplied. We need the power of numbers to support Maureen and her family! 2013 has certainly brought its challenges to the Smith household. We are relieved to arrive at this holiday season together and thank you and the entire community for your support. Please take a moment today to stop by www.maureensmith.org and share any holiday wishes, prayers and support for 2014 as we move forward together. Thank you and Happy Holidays, Team Maureen Original Post On January 26, 2013 Maureen was diagnosed with a very rare Primitive Neuroectodermal Embriogenic Tumor(PNET). Country wide, far less than 100 adults per year receive this diagnosis. Maureen underwent an emergency craniotomy the very next day. The neurosurgeon successfully removed 98% of a massive tumor and pathology confirmed a cancerous PNET. Post surgery, Maureen spent 3 weeks at Mount Sinai for physical and occupational therapy. The tumor location was in the right side of her brain and the surgery created significant temporary paralysis due to its impact to her nerves that control the left side of her body. Maureen has made huge progress on that front and is now home and continuing her physical therapy as well as her oncology treatments. In terms of ongoing treatment, the medical staff has to attack this in the most aggressive manner to prevent the potential for re-growth and metastasis. Maureen has been in radiation treatments for the past four weeks and has two more weeks of radiation until she begins aggressive chemotherapy for several more weeks. During this time, there has been a tremendous outpouring of requests to provide support. For the most part, Andy has been leading the charge and the three kids, (10, 8 and 7 years old) have been leading as normal lives as possible. Maureen is a working Mom and the elimination of her income and the dramatic increase in medical and other costs are beginning to take their toll. The family and friends of Maureen are uniting to raise money to help Maureen and her family in this time of need. In addition to this short term fundraising page, there will be various community events over the next several months, a more permanent internet site, and other outreach activities all with a goal to provide longer term help. Your donation to this page will go a long way in starting to rebuild the platform Maureen will need to support her full recovery. Your love, caring, positive thoughts and generosity are incredibly motivating for Maureen. It helps her keep "fighting like a girl!" and maintaining her positive attitude for a successful outcome to this long treatment process. Thank you!
