Taylor Family Journey with Myleofibrosis

My dad’s name is Harold. Dad is the most laid back, easy going guy I know. I don’t remember a time when he ever really raised his voice-which takes a TON of control considering there of 7 of us kids and we put him through A LOT. My dad is married to the love of his life and his best friend in the entire world, my mom Debbie. You know those great romances that you see in the movies and think can’t be for real? Trust me- they do exist- I’ve seen it in my own parents.

In November of 2011, my dad was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer called Myelofibrosis. Myelofibrosis is a disorder of the bone marrow, in which the marrow is replaced by scar (fibrous) tissue. This means that my dad’s bone marrow is dry. Bone marrow is basically a factory where various blood cells are produced. Blood cells are a necessity to live. When a person’s bone marrow is dry, it means they’re not making the blood cells they need to survive. Obviously, this is bad.  Dad was approved for and had his first bone marrow transplant in November of 2012.  His second and final attempt at a lifesaving bone marrow transplant will take place on March 5, 2013.

Just after my dad was approved for his bone marrow transplant, he lost his job (go figure, right?) and because of the severity of his illness, he isn’t able to work. Dad needs a personal care nurse and my parents can’t afford one, so instead of my mom picking up work, she has to look after my dad every second of every day until he is well again per the doctors at Dana Farber. Dad has been approved for disability, but that won’t kick in until the end of March 2013. Dad’s COBRA insurance is $1,500 a month and he must continue paying COBRA in order to have the bone marrow transplant he needs to live. With no income until the end March of 2013, there are so many uncertainties about how my mom and dad are going to pay the medical bills as well as their day to day living expenses. My parents don’t just have to worry about providing for themselves. They also have to worry about Sarah, Charlie and Sam-my youngest siblings all of who are under the age of 13.

If you’re not able to give financially, please know that I truly understand that times are tough for everyone and know that I appreciate you keeping my family in your thoughts and prayers.
