TAKING TEENAGE GIRLS BACK TO SCHOOL

Nganzi Legal Aid Project NILAP is a registered Non profit organization advocating for rights of underprivileged groups in society. Our mission is to promote and protect the rights of marginalized groups in Uganda.

The rate of early marriages and teenage pregnancies in Uganda is alarming and sorrowful. Parents are marrying off under age daughters to rich men so that they get hefty bride price. Poor families are not respected or recognised in most communities and this has driven families with teenage girls to arrange marriages with wealthy men so that they accumulate wealth and earn respect in society. Some parents only take their sons to school. We have carried out a survey and parents believe taking girls to school is a waste of resources since they are going to be married off. Girls therefore stay at home and learn how to do house chores in preparation for marriage.

Teenage girls are dying while giving birth and other unfortunate girls develop fistula.

Girls are equally important and productive in society however irrresponsible selfish parents have refused to take them to school and opted to marry them off.

Nganzi Legal Aid Project NILAP has so far rescued and taken back to school Thirty two (32) girls. The organisation pays their tuition and provides them with basic needs.

The Project relies on donations from wellwishers to take these girls back to school and alot has been achieved with such resources. Communities have applauded our help through feedback reports. However, the organisation needs funds to sustain them and rescue more girls.
