Take a chance, make a CHANGE.
Join us in a home improvement project for the elderly at Lengkok Bahru.
With an increasing number of senior citizens living alone, many efforts were put in place to ensure their well-being. For instance, organisations like the Senior Activity Centre were set up to act as a communal space for the elderly to engage in activities and find social support. Social Service Organisations also conduct weekly home visits to help the elderly combat depression and loneliness.
However, care services are not always provided 24/7 to the elderly, leaving many of them unsupervised at home where majority of their time is spent. According to reports, there has been an alarming increase of elderly persons found dead in their own homes only to be discovered a few days later. Aside from ill health problems, injuries suffered at home are found to be a common cause of death amongst the elderly.
Narrowing down our focus to the estate of Lengkok Bahru, we learnt that the rental flats are popular amongst the low-income families and individuals. Senior citizens residing in the area are identified to be living in poor home conditions which lack amenities to facilitate safe mobility. As the elderly make up about a third of all one-person households here, many risk their health and safety as they try to carry out daily activities in their own homes.
With the generosity of the community, we hope to garner enough support and donation to help built more elderly-friendly homes. Funds will be used to install home features and furniture to improve home conditions, creating a more comfortable and safer environment for the elderly.
