Table View Angels – Safehouse

Giving hope and sustenance to families going through short term financial difficulties in the Greater Table View Area, Cape Town

Table View Angels (TVA) is a community focused charity group and our NPO registration Number is NPO 167-985. TVA has been serving the greater Table View area since September 2014. We work only with volunteers and as such do not incur any staff costs. Everything we collect goes to families in need. We have external auditors managing the finances of the charity and good corporate governance is adhered to.

Table View is in urgent need of a safehouse/ shelter as we find that the closest shelter is 35km away and is over crowded. We often can't help families with children who end up sleeping on the streets. We have a house available, but must come up with R30 000 for deposit and rent. We are working on getting regular funds to sustain this house.

We see a growing need in this community as more and more people are retrenched and see no way of feeding their families while they look for new employment. TVA relies solely on the financial assistance and generosity of the local businesses as well as private individuals in order to keep helping the growing number of people in need of short term assistance. We are actively pursuing national and international assistance. The Angels do not simply help with food and clothing, but are expanding our assistance to help people with the compilation of CV’s as well as logging their details with suitable career web sites and assisting with transport to attend interviews etc.

The main aim of our charity is to get people self-sufficient as soon as possible. TVA offers assistance for a maximum of 3 to 4 months per family and all families are assed for drug and alcohol abuse as we strive to help those who seriously want to gain their independence.

Our main requirements are food, clothes, electricity vouchers, cleaning chemicals, baby food and nappies. Cash donations enable us to purchase fresh veg and meat weekly. We will gladly accept any day to day goods a family would typically require.

About Us

Table View Angels consists of a group of volunteers who aim to help the broader community by making a dignified difference to the lives of people who need a temporary helping hand. We investigate the request made to us thoroughly, then we conduct a compulsory home visit and only after our stringent criteria are met do we offer assistance. It should be made clear that our assistance is short term only, as we expect our families to stand on their own feet by finding new employment as soon as possible. We don’t simply offer food, clothing and basic essentials, we offer hope and smiles to people who are often extremely depressed. If required, we refer our families to professionals. We do not help or enable addicts, but refer them to professionals who can assist them, only if they want help. We also try and get those in need to empower themselves and in the future, pay it forward in their own way. All our projects are dealt with in an extremely confidential and discreet manner. On average we feed 20 families per week.

Projects

Our current modus operandi is to help families by way of food donations, clothing, baby goods & household items, pet food and vets bills on occasion. Our volunteers deliver packages to each family which is highly resource and time intensive. Our donors have largely been private individuals from the neighborhood, however, in order to meet the growing needs of our community, we are spreading the net to include corporate social donations. We do naturally also conduct our own fund raisers periodically as well. This will allow us to negotiate with bulk buying organizations such as ManageItGroup enabling us to spread our assistance to a broader group of people in need. It is important to reiterate that our finances are audited by external auditors and we adhere to strict corporate governance practices.

New Requirements

We need a store room and administrative office and space to store non perishables and clothing. We need sufficient space to pack and sort all the weekly groceries and other goods. Naturally it should be in a secure environment. We are looking for premises that include space for a charity shop in order to bring in more revenue in the medium term. In the longer term we would like to investigate the opening of a Safe House as there simply isn’t one in our neighborhood.

Get involved in your Community

We invite everybody with a passion and care for our community to get involved with Table View Angels. Be it through donating something you no longer need, getting a sponsor or corporate on-board, lending a helping hand when we do food drives or just being available for emotional support. If you have expertise to assist with counseling or you are a recruiter that can help with a CV or have a small business and can donate a gift, we accept any and every donation. Mobilize your families, particularly your kids to perhaps buy a packet of 2 minute noodles with their pocket money each week so that they can learn about giving to those less fortunate. There is nothing worse than a hungry child, and believe us when we tell you, there are hundreds of hungry kids in our neighborhood. If we all pull together, we can make a difference to someone.

• If you have anything in your home that you no longer use, please donate it!
• Anything that you replace we can use in a needy home, this applies to any small or large appliance.
• Spring cleaning? We need your old clothes!
• We also collect nonperishable food that we can store and give out with our food hampers weekly.
• Fresh produce is needed each and every day. Please refer to our attached drop off points. Baby formula, baby food and nappies are needed each week.
• Toiletries, female hygiene products and cleaning products are also required weekly.
• Functioning Toys for children are always welcome.
• Dogs and cats also go hungry in these homes every week.
