How much is needed?

We're raising £5,000 to Urgent winter camp provisions for Syrian and Iraqi refugees because they are freezing cold ,wet, risking hypothermia, tuberculosis, malnutrition and death from viral or bacterial outbreaks.

What are the conditions like?

Winter is setting in and big charities are pulling out of Calais .Now is when things are becoming more and more desperate in the camps. The distribution systems are broken as there are just not enough volunteers. I have learned it is best to just go into the camps and give directly to the refugees and bypass the politics bureaucracy and Ineffectiveness of big charities.I have been in the camps three months now and look after the most desperate and vulnerable Syrian and Iraqi refugees with their kids.

Why should we care?

I can't stand to see already badly war traumatised people with small children forced to face almost certain death from hypothermia in Europe as the weather is getting colder, wetter and more dangerous. There is no help for them currently that adequately meets their needs for warm shelter, enough warm food and thermal underwear. The local French authorities are not winterising the camps for all. About 4000 people are excluded. Many are children and babies.

How will the money be spent?

The money will be spent in local shops to buy items needed the minute and day they are needed. It will fund a vehicle to assist in deliveries of aid immediately. The vehicle will be used to also collect from current stock in warehouses sitting gathering dust .There is a dire lack of vehicles on the ground for errands and to take people to and from hospital.Spending money locally stimulates the economy and eases tension in the community hosting the refugees. The sick need warm beds especially.

All daily Receipts will be posted on Facebook. There will be an explanation for each.Photos of the aid given will be regularly updated.

About me?

Jennifer McLennan

I have been working in the refugee camps since August. I have never seen a refugee crisis this dire in my whole lifetime. I have been focussing on media, human rights ,mental health and aid delivery to the camps. I learned you cannot rely on big charity anymore, they just aren't there.I have been spending 30% of my own income helping as I cannot see people risk sure death so near to me, due to reasons all beyond their control.

Hello from Calais

Update posted by Jennifer McLennan at 01:28 pm

Over here now, the money has been used to replace one broken mobile, 3 nights of shelter for someone living under the bridge .He was soaking wet and freshly tear gassed to the point of temporary and terrifying blindness , bleeding from the hands and deeply distressed when I saw. . . . .
