Syrian Refugee Crisis Campaign at CMC

In Syria, the bloody conflict has displaced at least 7.6 million people within the country. Around four million have fled abroad as refugees – 95 percent of them are spread across Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt.

At least 380,000 of the refugees in those countries have been identified by the UN refugee agency as in urgent need of resettlement in other countries where they can restart their lives with the support they need. They include vulnerable people who have survived rape and torture, unaccompanied children, and those unable to access the medical care they desperately need.

The conflict in Syria has played out on our TV screens, in newspapers and online for nearly four years now. This is a crisis we cannot afford to ignore. In the face of such tragedy, we may at times be overwhelmed, but there is something we can do.

The Amnesty International Chapter at Claremont McKenna College is raising funds to donate to the official AI campaign in order to raise awareness and support for these refugees. All art pieces were graciously loaned by human rights activist, Bonnie Abaunza to the Mgrublian Center for Human Rights, and each expresses a different element of how human rights and social justice touches our lives. All donations of any amount are accepted. Art will be on display from October 21 - November 2, 2015 at the Mariam Miner Cook Athenaeum at Claremont McKenna College.
