Hi, my name is Hamish and for almost 4 years now I have been involved with Suubi Lyaffe, a centre for children with disabilities in the suburbs of Kampala, Uganda. I was last there in 2022 for 4 months and now it is time to support them again, but for now from my home in Scotland.

Suubi Lyaffe was founded in 2015/16. It has around 40 kids registered at the centre, with the disabilities of the kids ranging from extreme Cerebral Palsy (meaning they need full time care) to mild Brain Damage and developmental delay. (meaning they could live a fairly normal life with help).

People with neurological disabilities can get a lot of stigma due to their conditions, particularly in less developed countries and in this case a lot of the children are living in near poverty with single mothers due to it. And because of this the centre is all they've got.

I first went there in 2019 for 6 months and I met Aoife Buckley who had been working with the centre for years. And so now we are combining our efforts with this fundraiser, from our home countries. In May and June, Aoife, myself and someone else are climbing Carrauntoohil, Snowdon and Ben Nevis, the highest mountains of Ireland, Wales and Scotland respectively, in aid of the fundraiser.

If anyone has any questions or queries about the fundraiser just email either Hamish at [email protected] or Aoife at [email protected].

Suubi Lyaffe translates to "Our Hope" in English; If you are reading this and are interested in helping us, then you are our hope.
