In August 2014 I was run over by a vehicle and suffered an open tibia/fibula fracture and a three inch tendon tear. I've had two surgeries to repair the injuries and I was out of work for a total of 27 weeks. A third surgery is needed to remove the rod and screws. I have an HSA medical insurance plan with a high deductible and out of pocket amount. Since it is a new fiscal year I have to pay for the next surgery out of pocket.

Getting to know me:

My name is Eric. I am a member of the church of Christ in Goshen, OH. I currently work as a paramedic for a level 1 trauma center. For twelve years before my current job, I worked as a firefighter and paramedic for a local fire department. In my spare time I enjoy the theater arts, music and special effect makeup for theater. I'm also involved with a community theater group in many aspects of theater production.

The grim event:

At the time of the injury, I was volunteering as a parking attendant for a local tennis tournament. It is the biggest fundraiser the theater group I'm involved with does each year. I had volunteered for this fundraiser for at least the past six years. I was hit and run over by a vehicle while directing traffic and pedestrians at a crosswalk. An elderly man (80yo) was preparing to turn left onto the road toward the crosswalk. This was a problem because there were pedestrians crossing in the crosswalk and because I was directing him to turn right. The man was not paying attention. He did not heed my continued attempts to get him to turn right as I waved my orange light and flag. As the man proceeded to pull out and turn left he was looking down the street to the right and not looking forward. I was standing 12ft. directly in front of him and was unable to react fast enough to get out of the way. With impact imminent I attempted to push myself out of the way. As I fell to the ground the driver proceeded to run over my legs. I watched my leg collapse under his tire. I am thankful and very blessed because the outcome could have been much worse.

More to the store:

After the grim event, I never heard from the man's insurance company. When over two weeks had past I believed I needed to contact a lawyer. I do not believe in suing people and I needed a lawyer to see what was rightfully mine. I told my lawyer from the beginning that I did not want to sue the man personally and that I only wanted what insurance coverage he carried. As my lawyer pursued a settlement we found out that the man was under insured and only carried minimum coverage. My lawyer encouraged me to pursue a lawsuit against the man personally, but I refused. The claim adjuster for the insurance company tried to avoid paying as much as possible. By the time I pay the lawyer, pay remaining medical debt, and my medical insurance getting their cut of the settlement, I have no money left. That means I have no money for my additional surgery, no money for lost wages and no money for pain and suffering.

This gogetfunding request is only to get money for my upcoming surgery that will be part of my deductible and out of pocket expense. My HSA insurance policy has a $2,500 deductible and $11,000 out of pocket. The doctor estimates the surgery will cost $6,000 to $10,000. In addition to the medical expense, I will also be out of work for 2 to 3 weeks for recovery. My medical expenses for my first two surgeries and followup doctor visits came to $82,000. I'm thankful my medical insurance paid for most of that, but I still paid the deductible and out of pocket amount and was out of work for 27 weeks. I ended up wiping out my savings accounts at two banks.

I am thankful for any amount you are able to give. I don't want it to be a burden for anyone to give. Thank you for your generosity.
