At the age of 12, I already know what I want to study when I reach college; this is because of my mom’s story.
In their generation and way of living in the province, it is ok, and, commonly, they don’t proceed to college. Girls are expected to be at home and get married. My mom thinks differently. Because of her grandfather’s help, she was able to come to Manila, enroll for college, but later on, her grandfather died. The only person who is supporting her with her goal passed away. She needed to stop schooling and work instead. It is her dream to have a degree in Mass Communication and later on work in the field, but that didn’t happen due to difficulties.
From then on, I told myself that I would make my mom’s dream come true. I wasn’t expecting that I will really fall in love with the course because when I was little, I only wanted to become a singer. I was very dedicated to finishing the study. By then, I found myself and what I wanted to become.
There it went 2010; I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication, and a few weeks after graduation, I was able to make it to the industry for work. I landed a job in one of the country's biggest TV Networks. I know I made my mother happy and proud. And it was the best fulfillment I ever had.
May 6, 2020, was my mom's 55th birthday. This day, a coincidence it may sound, but I received great news! I earned myself a spot at the École Internationale de Création Audiovisuelle et de Réalisation - EICAR (The International School of Film and Television Paris) for Master of Fine Arts in Filmmaking. I can't remember when was the last time I've been the happiest, until this day!
I want to continue growing in the field I chose. I want to bring myself to the next level with a bag of passion, delightful knowledge and experiences, a sparkle of inspiration and dedication. With this, I am knocking on your kind hearts if you can help me make it to my MFA. Unfortunately, my funds wouldn't be that enough for a two-year Master's Studies. This is very important for me; indeed, your help would mean so much and wouldn't get to waste.
Fulfilling these studies will, for sure open more opportunities for me. Aside from self-fulfillment, I have this strong commitment to sharing knowledge that can help and inspire the people around me - I want my content to do the same. What will I learn and the hands-on experiences I will have in pursuing a Master's Degree are not only for my personal and professional growth/development but also to others as I want to share it with the young generation wanting to pursue the same industry as I did through teaching, and even to the industry itself in the Philippines through working and applying what I learned. As well as sharing it with people I am working with.
I want to teach students in the Philippines, share them what I learned and acquired over the years of working in the industry, both Television and Film, as well as what I will amass from studying Master of Fine Arts at EICAR The International School of Film and Television, Paris. Most notably, I want to inspire them that with dedication and fulfilling what your good heart desires, there is nothing impossible. To just keep going and reach your goal, whatever it is, and no matter how hard it is to achieve.
The industry is like a battlefield, but it isn't just about strength and strategy. In this fast-paced world, beyond the technical, creative skills, I learn and keep learning, my patience, perseverance, optimism, hard work, and grit are always put to the test. And I know as long as I am in the industry, work doesn't stop because of innovations, technology, new information, and whatnot that I need to adapt and be knowledgeable about.
I am eyeing to study Master of Fine Arts in Filmmaking, mainly to expand my skills, especially in the technical aspect of it, such as editing. Also, being in a different setting, learning how things are done in terms of cinema here and there gives me a new perspective and would definitely improve everything that I know, and could add more to it. I think it will equip me with more knowledge and skills, creatively and technically, to effectively communicate/relay impactful stories and reality to different audiences. I am eager to learn more about the essentials I need to engage myself with, enable me to expand my skills, strengths, and as well as develop my weaknesses.
I am looking forward to making my own films and projects that are socially conscious and relevant, purposeful, inspiring, would tickle people's minds and emotions, and will reflect the truth.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you very much. Pura Vida!
