Supporting refugees arriving in Lesbos Greece
Inspired by a friend who spent 3 weeks at Christmas volunteering there, I am off to Lesbos on Feb 1st till Feb 20th to do whatever I can to help.
There are currently an average of 1000 refugees arriving in Lesbos daily from Turkey ,in overcrowded inflatable boats .They come from war torn countries, arriving wet and traumatised with nothing. They need emotional support, dry clothing and assistance for survival.
Sitting in the warmth and comfort of my home, I felt I had to do something to help, as I am fortunate enough to have the time and wherewithal to make a small contribution by offering my services for this short time.
There is no NGO organisation coordinating support and relief on the island, so many individuals like myself are going there to offer what they can. I will be working in a warehouse helping to sort clothes for the first 2-3 days, possibly meeting refugees on the beaches as they arrive, playing with children, doing anything that is required to help.
I have covered my travelling costs, flight and transport on the island . (approx. £400).
I am raising money to purchase some of the things that I have been told are needed to take out there, new women’s knickers, jeggings, waterproofs ,space blankets and medicines.
I am taking a very large suitcase which I will fill with the above plus pens and pencils for kids and bubble mixture! and any which hopefully my friends will dig out from their cupboards! It is very cold on Lesbos at night right now.
Some of the money raised will go towards purchasing much needed items for the refugees which can be bought on the island, and this will also be beneficial for the Greek economy.
If I manage to raise my goal, I would like to be able to put £200 towards my accommodation costs. (£380)
Any contribution to support this initiative will be most gratefully received.
As I am leaving for Lesbos in two weeks I am hoping that you will be inspired to respond speedily!
Thank you so much
Di
