Support the Stroke Awareness Campaign

I’m a Physiotherapist with 6 years work experience. I recently encountered a young lady (only 12 years old) who had developed a stroke with left side paraplegia (She had lost function of the left side of her body). She developed the stroke 6 months ago and its only now, that she has been brought to the clinic for medical care. She has dropped out of school and looked hopeless and dejected. Her parents have blamed the stroke on supernatural forces, thus the delay in seeking medical help. This made me appreciate the amount of misconception and misinformation about stroke out there, and the harm that can cause.

Having realised this i, together with the entire Physiotherapy Department of Home Physio Consult is organising a major stroke awareness campaign in major towns in Accra and Kumasi

Stroke constitutes a significant cause of Morbidity and Mortality in Ghana, thus its awareness and education is very important.

We are carrying out this project because

• Stroke affects the majority of the Ghanaian populace, regardless of class or educational level, mostly due to poor knowledge on the causes and prevention of these conditions
• Rehabilitation and treatment for Stroke is expensive thus the poor and vulnerable in society are unable to access proper and quality Rehabilitation and treatment, resulting in permanent disability in most cases

The project has volunteers from the University of Ghana Association of Physiotherapy students sharing fliers (containing information on the causes, management and prevention of Stroke), and getting the names and details of people with stroke or back pain at the various towns

The list will then be compiled and screened at the end of the sessions. Fifty selected people with various degrees of stroke and back pain will then be given quality physiotherapy and medical care for a period of 6 months free of charge
