Hello! My name is Eden and I am currently in Arusha, Tanzania completing a social work internship at Samaritan Village Orphanage. Samaritan Village is a non-profit Christian organization that has cared for over 200 children since it was established in 1996. Currently they care for 67 children from 7 months to 20 years old. At Samaritans they strive to provide a bright future for the children, many of which end in domestic or international adoption. Those that are not adopted as children still receive support and guidance from the orphanage as young adults. I have gotten to know a few individuals that were raised at Samaritans and they are extremely kind and respectable young adults. It is clear that every staff member truly cares for the children as if they were their own.

Over the past month, I have been getting to know the children, caring for them, and helping with daily tasks throughout the orphanage. Despite the continuous and wonderful care that the staff members provide, I have observed many areas that are in desperate need of improvement.

The toddlers' play room was the first thing that caught my attention. There are currently seven toddlers that spend much of their day in this room, and due to this, it has seen a lot of wear and tear. The walls are peeling, the rugs smell very strongly of urine, toys and trash are scattered all over the floor, and the room is dimly lit by a small lightbulb. My hope is to transform this room from dark, musty, and unsanitary to bright, clean and colorful! I intend on painting the walls and purchasing new rugs, baskets for the toys, a new light fixture, new stuffed animals, and a fan for better ventilation.

Another area of much needed improvement is hygiene. Items such as toilet paper, tissues, and hand soap are rarely used. This is very concerning to me, considering that the children eat many meals with their hands, as it is culturally normal to do so in Tanzania. Because of this, the children are constantly sick. It only took me one day of being at the orphanage to get sick myself, so I can't imagine how hard it is for the kids to stay well. I plan on encouraging the staff and children to use hand soap, tissues, etc. by stocking up and giving them a large supply.

The last major area of needed improvement is cleaning supplies. As of now, all of the cleaning supplies such as mops, brooms, sponges, and towels are extremely worn down and inefficient. Anytime that I am helping to clean, I imagine how much more thorough and efficient it would be with brand new supplies. I plan on upgrading all of the cleaning supplies and buying multiples to last them for years to come.

In addition to the needs that I have observed, the orphanage is always in need of funding for necessities like clothing, shoes, food, and school supplies. After purchasing the items for the projects listed above, any additional funds will go toward these necessities.

I will be working at Samaritans through the first week of July, and I look forward to completing all of these projects! Any donations at all are greatly appreciated, and they will go directly into funding the needs of the orphanage. I have loved getting involved in the small community at Samaritans and have been given so much kindness and patience since the beginning. I can easily see that they have their heart in the right place and they are just the kind of people that I want to help! Thank you so much for your support!
