Hi,

My name is Nawi Mabo, and I am reaching out from Papua New Guinea.

Many of us have perhaps heard the phrase; “A safe pregnancy is a human right for every woman regardless of race or income” While this is very true, not every woman gets this right when birth calls. Approximately 289’000 woman die every year from pregnancy or childbirth complications, 99% of this from developing countries. In Papua New Guinea (PNG) alone, 5 rural women die every day from childbirth! One of the main causes of this is that these poor women have very little to no money to pay to travel to urban health facilities to deliver safely.Faced with this hardship, many take the inevitable choice of giving birth in bush facilities using traditional methods and the efforts of unprofessional midwifes. And for 5 of these women making this choice every day, it is plainly their own death sentence! One can imagine the grief and sorrow that shadow such adversities. Mila Ronza, a father of two young children who recently lost his wife and newborn child to birth complications could not hold back tears as he lamented “Our women are dying in their efforts to bear us children, all the while we have no means of getting them to better and safer health care”. Another man who sat next to me had been widowed twice; both his wives of subsequent marriages, victims of child birth complications. They left him seven children to take care of. As I listened silently, I could not restrain my thoughts about the sufferings these improvised people faced. Nevertheless, I was equally convinced that there were solutions to such problems; that there is still hope in humanity despite these happenings; that if an appeal to address these problems was raised, it will trigger many individuals abroad to spring into action and kindly give. Such have I, placed my appeal on this site.

What is my appeal?

My appeal is to raise funds to pay for women with known labour difficulties to travel to urban facilities to be better cared and attended during pregnancy and delivery. This will ensure safe birth for mother and baby, thus reducing the suffering these unfortunate people face. For this reason, I am unashamedly but kindly appealing to anyone who reads this message to support this effort by generously contributing donations of any amount.

How will the funds be used?

I work with an airline company that provides services to some of the most remote parts of the world including PNG. Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) provides air transport in places of deepest human need – remote places where flying is not a luxury but a lifeline. In PNG, our network of service reaches many isolated communities. If I hear over our communication network that a woman desires to come to an urban facility to deliver but does not have money, I will pay for her to travel on MAF (see picture) or by other means. The payment for her to travel to an urban facility to safely deliver will come from funds raised through this appeal.

How will I know my donations are used for the right purpose?

I will send you receipts if you provide me an email address. I will also send stories of what your donation helped achieve as well as short video clips where possible showing such accomplishments.

God bless your  kind hearts for giving to a worthy cause.
