Support S.T.E.M. Education This Summer

This summer I have decide to be part of the solution, rather than the problem. I have taken on the task of providing quality educational programming for 20 at-risk youth in Houston, TX. This project idea came about as I work side by side with teachers and students each day. I believe that our current educational efforts are not preparing our children to compete in a global economy. It is my hope that this camp will peak the curiosity of these students and expose them to the wide variety of careers and opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (S.T.E.M.).

Timeline

Phase 1: Curriculum planning (completed)

Phase 2: Market camp to students (begins May 1 - 31, 2013)

Phase 3: Provide program for students (June 17 - 28, 2013)

Phase 4: Revisions, editing,fFormatting magazine (throughout camp)

Phase 5: Mail out Rewards (early August 2013)

Use of Funds

The funds will be used to allow students to work together to create a digital and print magazine that will highlight the camp activities. The camp will feature inventing challenges, guest speakers, and weekly field trips. In order to create the magazine we will need equipment such as digital cameras, writing materials, software, and materials for the student challenges. In addition, the cost of transportation for students to interview professionals in S.T.E.M will be made possible from this campaign. We will use the trips as a way for students to learn what it take to produce a publication as well a time for students to conduct interviews.
