The project… In June 2015, I plan to join an ongoing research expedition aiming to save one of the world’s foremost biodiversity hotspots; the cloud forests of Cusuco National Park in Honduras. The park is listed within the top 100 most irreplaceable sites anywhere on Earth and home to many species classified by the IUCN as ‘critically endangered’ with extinction. The project is led by Operation Wallacea (Opwall); a charity organisation that runs biological and conservation management research programmes in remote locations across the world. Since 2004, Opwall have been working with the aim of protecting Cusuco National Park from further deforestation, where the majority of losses to date have been in prime forest with 91-100% cover. What is my role? I will be involved as a research assistant in the completion of Opwall’s 2015 survey; monitoring and assessing change in forest cover and biodiversity. By educating local communities on the areas’ biological importance and promoting the sale of carbon credits as a means of financial incentive, Opwall hope to eliminate local agricultural conversion of the prime forest within the next 20 years. I am hoping to give 6 weeks of my hard work and devotion to this worthwhile cause, and, given my background in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), computer mapping and research skills, I believe I can make a significant contribution to the project. How can you help? To be able to be a part of this 4-week project requires independent funding in the region of £3,000. This covers essential costs such as transport, scientific training, equipment, medical insurance, food and accommodation. I am hoping to raise an additional £800 which would enable me to assist with Opwall's 2015 Coral Reef survey, a similar 2 week project undertaken on the offshore reefs, also in Honduras. Why is this project so important for me? I have always been passionate about wildlife and this trip would give me the unique opportunity to be a part of the amazing conservation work Opwall are completing to save this natural habitat and its inhabitants. The trip would also assist in the beginning of a potential new career path for me; providing the opportunity to gain vital experience in the field; necessary to pursue this line of work.
