Rhys has been working towards his goal of swimming at Age Group Nationals for the past 3 years. One meet after another he came closer and closer to making qualifying times. This takes thousands of hours of training in the pool and for Rhys, in Open Water. At the age of 15 he has finally reached his goal and is heading to Calgary Alberta on July 23rd to spend 6 days competing with Canada's best swimmers.
Rhys will compete in the following events; 200, 400, 800 and 1500 Freestyle and 5km Open Water. Rhys is the current 2km Ontario Open Water Champion for his age group and will be challenging himself again on Wednesday June 6th in Brampton Ontario to swim the 5km race.
Rhys is a good student who has aspirations of becoming a fine carpenter and /or perhaps a Chiropractor.
As a family we find it challenging to keep up with the economic demands of this sport. We are fundraising for 3 airline tickets $ 3000, a car rental while in Calgary $1000, meals during our stay and a few pieces of new swimming equipment for Rhys; a new competition swim suit $450, a new pair of competition goggles $80 and perhaps a new training suit $50. The chlorine eats everything so quickly and these items bear the brunt of it.
