Campaign Story
Mohammad Akhtar, a 31-year-old father of four, was killed on July 22 in Kabul in a suicide bombing claimed by the Islamic State group.
Akhtar, who had worked for Agence France-Presse (AFP) as a driver for 11 years was on his way to work when he was caught in the blast near Kabul airport – an apparent assassination attempt on Afghan Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum.
His death comes less than three months after AFP's chief photographer in Afghanistan, Shah Marai, was killed in a bomb attack.
Akhtar -- who was related to Marai -- leaves a wife and four children, the youngest only a few months old. He was the family’s only source of financial support.
He was a much-loved and respected member of the AFP team in Kabul, remembered by his colleagues for his gentleness, patience, and soft-spoken courage and professionalism.
This appeal is aimed at anyone inside AFP or outside the agency who would like to make a personal donation for the benefit of Akhtar’s family, with 100% of the funds collected going to his wife and children

I worked with Akhtar at AFP after my friend the late Sardar Ahmad brought me on the team. Gulistan and I were so sad to learn that Akhtar was killed. I remember him as being thoughtful, responsible and that I always felt both comfortable and safe around him. We're heartbroken for his widow and children he leaves behind and hope they will get all the support they need. We also hope his children will always remember that their father was a hero. He heroically did his job every day and treated people Kindly and with compassion.
