Support for refugees arriving in Lesbos Greece

Update posted by Deasy Bamford On Jan 23, 2016

Hello all you good and wonderful people who helped to fund my work in Lesbos. I have now been back as long as I was there ,its a strange reality shift . Everything in Lesbos is so immediate and face to face, back here its updates on facelessbook, news snippets on the radio and a helpless sinking feeling that is hard to put to good use. I am learning though! One of the most important lssons in Lesbos was to deal with the person infront of you and not try to second guess or react with some formula, and that goes here too , each moment is the one we live in and we can only do what is possible in that moment.

I was very lucky to be able to go to Lesbos , it was a priviledge to be able to do something practical and positve, to feel that despite all, I could make a difference , in the moment and with good qulity clothes that would be really useful later on,on the Macedonian border. It was also a priviledge to witness and be part of a really unique humanitarian volunteer phenomena. To see us volunteers from across the world work together , almost hierarchy free, doing what needed to be done, accepting direction from each other, working long hours, making a difference where bureaucracy was indifferent and sluggish. It was inspiring ,people affirming and bloody useful .

The people we met who were fleeing the wars and dire circumstances they faced seeking refuge, were resilient, engaging, wise, hopeful and desparate sometimes. There were families and single men and women from Afghanistan, Iraq , Syria, The Congo, Morrocco,Eritrea, Lebanon, Pakistan and Iran , all these people wanted was a chance . A chance to live in safety and contribute to society through working and sharing their gifts. The sort of chance we take for granted.

The situation people find themselves in through no fault of thier own , a birth lottery , a political lottery , is cruel and in this globalised world one that we must all engage in .

So thank you so much for helping me to engage and share our joint priviledge.

The money raised was spent like this

£650 on shoes , gloves , hats and leggings

£250 on " The Dirty Girls " laundry . an amazing group who wash huge quanities of clothes to use again

£100 to the tea tent open 18hr a day

£100 on the childrens tent and travel to keep it open

£300 on medicine and direct aid to families

£200 on my personal travel

£1600

So onwards and upwards with this contiuous life of campaigning and contributing !

Hi Deasy, I'm a friend of Di Milstein, we've talked a lot about Lesbos and the situation there so I'd like to support you as a personal link to the people you will be helping - thank you.
