Our 23-year-old niece, Ping Meliton , was recently diagnosed with osteosarcoma, the most common type of primary bone cancer mainly affecting children and young adults.

In March 2016, Ping graduated and passed the board exam for Medical Technologists. She was immediately hired in a prominent private hospital in Davao City. While processing her medical certificate for employment, a routine X-ray revealed a mass in her left chest which was later reported to be malignant. To confirm the diagnosis, various medical procedures were conducted and second opinions from other pathologists obtained. In June 2016, The National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) Pathology Department in Quezon City diagnosed Ping with spindle cell (sarcomatoid) carcinoma of the lung but it was later determined by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City (in March 2017) to be osteosarcoma instead, arising from the rib.

Ping was admitted to the hospital in June 2016 and began chemotherapy in July. Still the mass grew to an alarming size so she had to undergo debulking surgery, involving Ping’s left chest cavity and causing severe pain and difficulty of breathing. Unfortunately, the mass grew back so her team of doctors then moved on to the next step, a 30-day External Beam Radiotherapy, that began in November 2016 and was supposed to finish in January 2017, but was cut short when Ping developed pneumonia.

On January 17th, Ping was rushed to the hospital with severe difficulty of breathing and was transferred to the ICU where she was intubated and hooked to a ventilator. On February 4th, she underwent a tracheostomy wherein a tube was inserted into her neck to enable her to breathe.

As of April 2017, Ping is still in the ICU of Southern Philippines Medical Center. According to her oncologist and other doctors, she will be having another round of chemotherapy, surgery and radiation therapy in accordance with the new diagnosis of osteosarcoma.

It’s been a year since Ping started her battle with cancer and unfortunately, our family has exhausted our financial resources to support her medical needs. We therefore humbly ask for your financial assistance to be able to continue Ping's treatment.

She was once full of life, a “mermaid” as she calls herself, who will keep on swimming until she reaches her dream of becoming a doctor, serving the sick, while providing a better life for her family. We just want her to realize her dreams, God willing . We’ve always believe that to Him, nothing is too late, nothing is impossible. With hope, prayers, and your help, Ping will have her season again.
