My reality right now:

I have been in hospital for 10 months now (I came here the morning of my 42’nd birthday 10 May 2019) I Hope to be released soon, but when that happens I will not have a wheelchair to get around, nor is my home fully equipped for the lifestyle and challenges that follows . I desperately need your help. Please

How It Started:

I broke my little toe - yෆu wouldn't think that something so small could end up being life threatening. At first my toe started to swell and turn blue. - I have no feeling in my legs so i wasn't too worried about it.

I started getting bed sores, and they were growing bigger. Then one morning my toe was black and going hard.I started getting bed sores, and they were growing bigger. Then one morning my toe was black and going hard.

(little did I know I was rotting inside and busy dying)

When i finally decided to go to hospital, the Doctors did a check up and looked at my bed sores. They sent me for all kinds of tests and scans, and saw I had a blocked aorta and no circulation to my lower body.

It all turned serious very fast. I was dying, and I didn’t have much time.

It was tricky to come up with a treatment plan because there were so many procedures and operations that had to be done and issues to be addresses.

The Treatment Plan:

  • They first had to get my infection levels down, so I wouldn't get septicaemia.
  • Then to get rid of the dead tissue on my sacrum so they can do a flap. (Staying off my back for 5 months so the wound could heal wasn’t easy )
  • Then the bypass that needed to be done was complicated and also the first of its kind in South Africa.
  • Finally they amputated my leg from the knee up. (This has been the hardest part. With constant trips to the ER for wound cleaning and treatment)

Conclusion:

It’s been a challenging year.

Lying in a hospital bed for 9 months watching your life pass by, brings up a lot of emotions. I have asked myself many times, if all of this is worth it, and am I worth it?

This journey has been more like a marathon and I am eagerly waiting for the finish line. I am hopeful and holding on and I still have some fight left in me. Maybe I am just to stubborn or too dumb to die. lol.. It's not in my nature to give up. I know with a little bit of help I CAN DO THIS.

What funds Will Be Used For:

  • Assisting Pieter to get his wheelchair replaced.
  • Catheter leg bag (used during the day) R30 per day - R900 per month.
  • Foley pipe R20 per day - R600 per month.
  • Catheter night bag R15 per night - R450 per month.
  • Linen savers - R60 per month.
  • Medication for spasms, bowl (stomach), probiotics, nerve pain and pain medication and the likes - estimate of R1500 per month.
  • His house is also not fully equipped with a wheelchair accessible bathroom and his 75 year old mother has to assist him. If we have to convert the bathroom, and ramps leading in and out the house.

My Future goals:

I would love to try out for the WBSA. http://wwwbasketball.co.za I know i am a little older that the majority of the members on the team but i feel it's important to keep challenging yourself and get out of your comfort zone.

Today we opened my leg for the first time since last week wednesday. It does not look great, and a bit of an odd shape. The skin is pink, but its still healing and its closed and the stitches are holding.Just 2 spots of concern on the stitch line, so hold. . . . .
