The professional hunter died on the blood-coated bed in the main bedroom where the couple were attacked while asleep. Mrs De Souza broke of her fingers - fighting back fiercely against the blacks who tried to rape her. Of the men pushed a knife against her throat, she was beaten, kicked and fought back, stabbing one of the killers with a knife. She was operated at the St Vincent Private Hospital in Warmbaths to reset her broken fingers. A member of the neighbourhood watch who had responded to the emergency call said the 'house looked like a slaughterhouse' .
